Why I ditched my 7MGTE and went 2JZ NAT with AEM

PICS ADDED AT PAGE 14

1. A used 2JZ is more durable/reliable.

2. A used 2JZGE can be sourced very easily for 400 bucks or less. You can re-use the head/rod/cap bolts. 300 for a thick HG and other assorted gaskets. Dont tell me you can build a comprable 7M for that price.

3. Im sick of scored camshafts.

4. Piggyback computers always have some quirk to work with or re-program. Going with a 2JZGE(T) and AEM keeps it under $2k.

5. I am sick of rodknock. Dont tell me its my fault.

6. The bottom end of a 2JZ is designed/built better than a 7M.

7. The stock valves are 1.5mm larger in a 2JZ. Oversize valves in a 7m still wont flow as well.

8. A 2jz wraps to higher RPMs.

I will take pics very soon - I just got the shortblock back together last night.

I had the block apart so that I could inspect everything and make sure it was in good condition. I also cleaned all of the carbon out of the piston ring lands. The motor came out of a 94 Supra w/70k miles. It is in GREAT condition. I can still see the cross-hatch in the cylinder wall and the pistons are still perfectly round. Bearings look good and the crank is great too.

I can't wait to go for a ride!

You should check out the block. I painted it up with some POR15 Engine Enamel. Looks nice. I cant wait to finish painting my engine bay so I can drop the block in.

Nasty.

What are you using for the pick up? Stock dist. or crank trigger. Not an expert on the na-t 2j, but have heard that upper boost levels stumble over lack of a good spark signal.

They have plenty of potential. Set the compression ratio with the appropriate head gasket. Purchase a single turbo manifold and appropriate turbo.... It makes perfect sense.

Yes, you have to go with an aftermarket ignition for high boost levels, but that has nothing to do with the block.......

arent the 2jzGE rods weaker than the gte rods? but the ge rods i was told will still do 600 hp.

How do you change over the ignition system from ge to gte for the aem?

Couldn't you just keep the distributor but run an inexpensive ignition box like msd 6a or crane hi-6?

Rods are the same in the GE and the GTE.

A 7M CPS can be used in the same way as a 7m with minimal modification in the 2JZGE head.

The CPS goes in the place of the distributor. I am running the recent generation of the AEM ignition.

what kind of power are you expecting to get out of the na 2j?

600 minimum for the dyno

550 or so for the daily but thats just an estimate

You are right about that, the last na-t swap I looked at couldn"t make over 600 with the distributor, had to go with an aftermarket crank trigger.

The best aftermarket ignition box will only work so well when the initial spark signal is crap.
