Got a wheel brand question. I'm not bright when it comes to my car so I was planning on a new set of Volk or Rays for the car and I think they run at about 1000.00 per wheel. Currently running Work wheels, but will be changing style.

I know that the wheels I'm planning are high end (mostly suited for tuner/racing) but I have seen nice rota's as well at a fraction of the cost. I drive 80-100 mph at times, but have no plans on racing or drifting.

Is there any reason to avoid "cheap" wheels?

I did notice my work Seekers took away a vibration I have at high speed but they need to be reconditioned (about 10 years old).

Cheap out or stay with plan?

I think I made my point. Don't cheap out if you plan on doing ANYTHING serious with your wheels/tires. Imagine if this stuff happened at high speeds.

For daily driving, driving 80 to 100 mph, there is nothing wrong with replica wheels like XXR and Rotas.

crazy, I always thought shit like that happened when people drove to into curbs. I have konigs and put them under a lot of stress and they seem to hold up, even curb rashed the fuck out of them once before. Although I love the look of work wheels with deep dishes, mine are decent but nothing crazy.

I've heard nothing but great things out of xxrs i myself are looking into 531s, pretty close to ccw replicas

i've had more than a few sets of "cheap" wheels, and have friends with them also. i have never seen one failure in person. as a matter of fact, i'll probably be going with xxr's again if i don't go with bigs and skinny's.

Kind of my point. Volk wheels (rays and Works as well) are intended for racing. If I was running quarter miles with 500-1000 rwhp I would go with them because I think they are suited to the task.
For a daily summer driver intended for "Show and Shines" and meets, there are a lot more aesthetic options if I go cheaper. The photos of the failed wheels are so rare on a street car you are more likely to have your brake rotors fall off than that happen, otherwise these companies would be out of business. I had a 500.00 set of wheels on my car for 4-5 years doing the same duty as my Work Seekers, and the only difference is that the Works just don't have the vibration that the cheap set had.

Im just thinking that cheap aesthetic wheels are probably more suited to my purposes until I finish the car. 4000-5000.00 can be better spent on getting the car to where I want it.

(all this comes from reading Volk's website. generally speaking they state they are high performance "racing" wheels, which I don't do)

Now.. if I was driving rally or putting my car on a track I would be thinking different, but 120 mph would be the absolute max I would ever take my car up to and that would be a rare event (just for the thrill) and very short term.

Us MK3 enthusiasts have a tendancy to want the best when it may just be silly to do so.


Just my thoughts on it, because I was kicking around styles and I cant find the look I want on the high-end wheels.

Against what others may recommend, I will run these discount MB's full-tilt on street upwards 500rwhp range and not think about it. Worst case, the Wilwoods may need to haul down a tripod, I suppose! ;)

I don't race, and I don't (usually... there was this one random night at the Indy 2K13 meet...) abuse my car... and after many months of effort, the Work Equip just didn't come together for me!

I will let you guys know if I rattle them to shreds or not! :)

Hence why I said ANYTHING serious. If you're not racing or Autocrossing, cheap wheels are okay. Aesthetically, they look just as good as expensive hi-performance wheels, and will last a long time if not abused too badly. But if you plan on more serious racing endeavours with your Supe, best get something more designed to handle the abuse.

^^^ I would agree completely with that statement. "Cheap Wheels" are a compromise to be sure... but a reasonable one in many cases.

If we are still on wheel and tyre sizes, has anyone run Kumho KU39's 255/40/18 on 18x9.5 rims? (ET 34) Front and rear.
My car is on the lowest notch on Bilstein shocks with stock (ish) springs.
I have been told that the side walls are quite square and do not want to roll my guards to clear them.
Any opinions on 255/40/18 tyres would be appreciated.

I have XXR 502's on my car, and haven't had any trouble with them, but just like Crisp- I don't go nuts on them at all.
I just saw a new style XXR that I really like. They remind me a bit of Rota's, but they are 5 spoke instead of 6, which I greatly prefer.

18x8.75 +20 is about $200 each, 18x10.25 +20 is about $215. How well do you suppose they would fit in those sizes/ offsets?

Convcave, rather than deep dish. Those sizes will fit well on a Supra.

i know this is useless without pics, but i'll share anyway. i just picked up some adr m-sport's in 18x8.5 +25 and 18x9.5 +20. the tires are 225-40-18 and 265-35-18. i am on h&r race springs and new kyb's...
well.................. the front and rears rub on big bumps, and the fronts rub on tight turns. the fenders are completely stock. for those who are wondering, the fitment will work with rolled and pulled fenders. i'll get pics up asap. :)
