its habit of mine that i normally put it 4th then reverse ...... but i normally just clutch and slip it into reverse without an issue

i normally go from reverse to 2nd then to 1st

again its just habit

your into-reverse habit is how the majority of the T-5 owning community (fox bodies and such) get into reverse since thats a bit difficult sometimes.

also, i try to do what you do as well, getting into first. just driving around town, stop and go, i dont go straight to 1st. i always go into 2nd and then into 1st. its a habit i picked up driving subarus and RX7's.

Clutch in, into reverse. works right 90 % of the time.

Otherwise:
Clutch in, doesn't go. Put in neutral, release clutch. Clutch in, try again.

Works like a charm every time. Just the occasional *CRUNCH* that can be embarrassing.

this is correct, anything else is a waste of time. same thing goes for 1st gear and this isnt only for our cars. many many other cars out there experience this problem, even some new cars.

I seriously wasn't kidding, I took that word for word out of the owner's manual...

I will say one thing, the Red Line MT-90 helped a LOT. I had issues getting into first sometimes, not anymore... Reverse was sometimes a pain.... not anymore. Second would sometimes grind a bit... Nope, not anymore...

I know the tranny will need a rebuild eventually, but damn it's nice to have it work pretty nice for being over 150K miles old...

straight to reverse works 95% of the time if it doesnt feel like it wants to go in i stop trying for a .5 of a sec never let my foot off the clutch and try again always works on the second time.

Perhaps you guys that have grinding problems are attempting reverse too quickly after disengaging the clutch or not disengaging it far enough so the input shaft is still turning, or trying while the car is moving so the output shaft is turning. The clunk is normal, esp if you do drag the clutch a little to get the cogs to mesh up and/or the slack is taken out of the driveline. Mine usually goes in to reverse with a solid metallic click unless the car is rolling.

Reverse has no synchros iirc, so to correctly put it in reverse you need to first put it in one of the forward gears.

I push in the clutch, go 1st, then reverse. If it doesn't go in, release the clutch and press it in again, go 1st and reverse again OR sometimes 1st-3rd-reverse works for me too.

I'll have to try that Gotturbos, thx for the tip

This is the trick I use. going in first..slight movement forward usually does the trick

I thought I was the only one! I usually put it in 2nd gear before going to reverse, but I don't let go off the clutsh between 2nd and reverse. It works *most* of the times, but not always. If it doesn't, then I improvise, I have no rule. On rare ocations it's been so stubborn, that I put it in first gear and move the car a few inches forward, then it goes into reverse. :)
