Drove my MK3 to drop off a package and get a haircut, while I was at the UPS store an old couple was walking to their car next to mine and the guy told me his dad surprised the family with a brand new MK3 just like mine and I let him sit in it and he had the biggest smile on his face. This happens almost every time I drive the car either people break their necks when I drive by or older people tell me how much they loved the one they had back in the day.

Worked on reassembling the motor. Need to grind down a socket to fit the head stud nuts.

I've seen many people do that, and I personally don't like it. I don't like how the surround bulges around the edges of it, and impinges on the climate control. I don't like how there's a gap at either side of the display.

I will say that the gauge face in the cigarette lighter location is beautiful, and I really like that. That's another potential option that I'm considering for the Zeitronix Zr-2 if I decide to put an oil/fuel pressure gauge in the A pillar pod (Assuming that I can find an affordable dual electric pressure gauge.)

It only bulges like that if your dash is delaminating, and it will bulge even if the ash tray is there if that's the case. Mine looks fine.

$1,600 for all of that, I expected it to be a lot more but makes it difficult to see what you had done with the list being cut off lol

Yeah they are a little pricey everyone told me that they were the best in town by far but they are on the pricey side of things but hey you get what you pay for right?

Is that "the works"? I plan on doing that when I get a jz motor when I get all of the parts and such then get the block and head machined, checked, etc. then have the shop install all of the new parts and check clearances and such. I would rather pay a lot to make sure the job is done properly than to take a gamble on cheaping out and hoping they do it right.

note that did have 1400 written for engine assembly and was then totaled with the value of 1000. due to my complaints of them having gone over double the initial quote. the only parts supplied by them were bearings which he said were good branded ones, (thanks for giving me peace at mind...FML)

Edit: this was for a 7m btw and im furious to see your assembly was only 450. ive been robbed

Ouch definitely got robbed. Ill have to dig up my receipts for the work done on my last rebuild. I paid somewhere in the neighborhood of 1200 and that was only assembly of the bare short block. I was told the shop I went to was also on the high side but seems I too over paid for what was done to my block. Mine was a 7m as well by the way.

@Smashey: Well, I'd have been at about $2k for my 7M, and that is with no assembly at all. Difference there being that I have full confidence in the work that was done, and though it was pricey relative to what some people are paying, I don't think that I got a bad deal at all.

Wow, I hate it when people write like that or in cursive. Luckily my mechanic knows a good reputable machine shop that some friends of mine have had work done by them and were really happy with their work.

You got hosed! My machine shop assembled my shortblock for $150.
I got my shortblock rebuilt with new 0.020 bored over pistons , crank was cut 0.010/0.010 with new rod and main bearings, decked with timing cover, connecting rods reconditioned/resized, new freeze plugs, and all assembled for $834. This is a reputable machine shop here in town. I've gone to other machine shops and they quoted me anywhere between $1100-1500 for the same work. I even went to one of those "performance" oriented machine shops and was quoted close to $2500 for the same work. Come to find out that this "performance" machine shop farms out most of their work to the machine shop I chose to get mine done.

If you paid by credit card I would open a dispute to credit back the money they overcharged you from the original quote they gave you. That's if your credit card company protects you from stull like this. Citibank card does. I can understand $200 more or less of their original quote, but they went over double the initial quote!? Either that, or tell your credit card company to refund all of the money and drop that shortblock on the front doorstep and cut your losses. For $3300 I could of had a rebuilt shortblock with callies rods & CP pistons stuffed in it, and still had money left over for some BC cams. Or a nice turbo, or P&P head work, or exhaust, you get the idea. If you paid by cash... sorry. Live and learn.

Idk if i'd say its the works.

I brought it to them with the cams out but the head was still bolted on they cleaned and painted everything for me Cam gears/pulleys/oil cooler/Sump ect

Also its a 1JZ-GTE

Disassemble
New freeze plugs (they provided but didn't charge)
Cleaned up my old Stock pistons
valve job new springs and retainers/valve seals
The sump from front to rear they cleaned both parts
Oil pump
Honed once to find out i needed to go .020
Bored and honed again
balanced crank
Check/Honed Rods
Rings and pistons
main and rod bearings
arp head studs were installed and head put on by them
oil pan out on
oil cooler cleaned and put back on
crank dampner cleaned and painted
cams cleaned
new timing belt tensioner installed
Decked head and block and installed metal head gasket

The way you see it in the pics is how i picked it up from them.

They took it upon them selves to paint and make everything nice and pretty for me.

Smashey, I'm trying to come down on you hard. I really feel for you. Just one question... when did you find out your initial quote more than doubled? Before, or after the work was performed? Did you have an itemized written work order with corresponding prices before the work was started?

Don't worry, it happens to the best of us. This goes for everyone getting any kind of work done wether it be mechanical, paint and body, home building, landscaping, etc. get a written work order with what's going to be done with the price on it. You can allow for a little increase just incase there's an unforseen mishap, but just a little. It should be explained to you why it will cost a little more before contiunuing the work by the contractor.

Never go on a verbal estimate. They will go back on what they told you, call you a liar, or simply avoid you and have somebody else deal with you. Since the new guy doesn't know what kind of deal you had with the last guy he'll ask if you have anything in writing. They he'll knock off a little of the total estimate and tell you that's all he can do for you without any proof that you had a lower estimate. I've been through it myself. It sucks, I learned, I moved on and now know how to protect myself from it happening again.
