The only thing I can think of is that by going 2 miles to the gas station, then two miles back to the freeway in the same direction (say, west to the station and west back the the same freeway) 30 miles of driving was eliminated? The stop provided a shortcut, I guess?

If this were miles on the odometer, it would be impossible, so, I suspect that it has to do with the one different between a tripmeter and an odometer... the fact that it can be reset.

If this is the case, then it must be 64 miles to grandmas house, the car that needed fuel drove half way, 32 miles, turned off and drove 2 miles to the fuel station, filled up, reset the tripmeter, then drove 2 miles back to the highway and 32 more miles to grandmas house, making 34 miles since the reset.

The other car has 64 miles on the clock, the fuel car has 34 miles on the clock. Difference, 30 miles.

I don't know the whole answer, but I believe it simply to do with this statement...

"the one vehicle which stopped for fuel has 30 less miles on its tripometer."

never makes mention of 30 less then the other car... just states 30 less... as in it had X amount and now it is X - 30... though without thinking out of the box you can't really call that clear... but that statement has NOTHING to do with the other car...

it is simply saying... He has 30 miles less... less then what, I have no clue, but he has 30 miles less on his trip meter... (if it was 30 miles more) then it would simply mean he drove 30 miles since he cleared it... to be able to go backwards... on his trip meter, I am not sure

damn...

facts

trip meters set to 0.
Same starting location.
same ending location.
Same grandma.
Both vehicles were driven.
Both took the same route.
one car is -30mi than the other.

i hate/love these things. In before GJ locks this thread out of frustration.

1 car did mass burn-outs... causing his car to think he was moving, when in reality his tires were the only thing moving.

Sadly with these questions, there are multiple answers... it may not be the answer you are looking for... "How can this be?" a question, asking for an answer...

many answers have been given, all of which are completely correct....

can, NOT how did this happen... but how can (could) this be...

sorry when a question does not have a definite answer... then there is no point in attempting to answer, because it all comes down to whatever the "creator" of that question thought of, not what the others thought of..

I chose "E" - Not enough information to properly answer the question

I love these things when there is only 1 possible answer... I completely hate them when there are 20 different possible ways it happened, and those who are giving the answers are told they are wrong. That is incorrect, they are correct, just not giving the answer you were looking for.
