Interesting. Are police dogs trained to pick up the scent of wolves or is that just something that is hereditary and would be sensed as a threat?GrimJack;1589121 said:Careful with the wolves. I used to know a guy who raised and crossbred wolves, and there were a *LOT* of problems there - ones that you wouldn't expect. Like the Police dog that picked up the scent of wolf on him and attacked in the middle of a chase. Beating down a German Shepard police dog isn't that tough when you're used to dealing with wolves, however, it leaves you with a bunch of really pissed off police officers carrying firearms. Same thing happened at the border between Canada and the USA with a drug dog.
I've heard several more stories of husky/wolf problems than of pure wolf problems, which seems appropriate considering what you've mentioned in addition to what the requirements are to having a pet wolf vs having a mix breed, though I think they've tightened up the rules on that lately.Supracentral;1589173 said:Wolves are a bad choice. They are way too wild. And a hybrid is even worse. You take the aggression of a wolf and couple it with the complete lack of human fear of a dog and you have a problem. I owned a Siberian Husky/Wolf mix years ago. It's a dog that will continually challenge your dominance and is way too aggressive to live with humans. Do yourself a favor, give it a miss.
Dogs like the Akita have a lot of wolf in them, but it's muted to a manageable level.
Haha yeah, that's part of why I prefer short-hairs. :icon_razzDreamerTheresa;1589196 said:The only high-maintenance part of an Akita is when their coat blows twice a year....
...leaf blowers work great on a shedding Akita. Ask me how I know.
More news to me. Also seems a bit stupid, but I guess that's our justice system nowadays (in addition to, ya know, the entire government). If I were to put up a beware of dog sign, it would be to warn people that they have more to worry about coming on to my property than the off chance that I'm home.DreamerTheresa;1589196 said:I will not put a "Beware of Dog" sign anywhere, as many jurisdictions see that as you're admitting your dog is aggressive.
Instinctual... wolves are bad, dogs have been helping humans defend against them for thousands of years.ret;1589439 said:Interesting. Are police dogs trained to pick up the scent of wolves or is that just something that is hereditary and would be sensed as a threat?
I would assume that if you were allowed to keep wolves then the authority would be aware though.
Buddy of mine has an awesome story about when he decided to buy a shotgun. The short of it is that he narrowed it down to 3 brands, Remington, Winchester, and Mossberg. How he picked between the three was to close his eyes and cycle the gun....guess which one he bought? The second part of the story was that he was showing his dad the gun in the garage, and his mom walked in right as his dad cycled the gun and scared the shit out of her. LOL!Supracentral;1588520 said:Get yourself a cheap, well made 12GA shotgun. It's one of the most practical home defense guns, it's easy to handle, doesn't require a whole lot of skill or practice to deploy and generally scares the shit out of people. Also, your Weimaraner was bred as a gun dog, he'll think it's cool.
A Mossberg Maverick Model 88 Security (12GA) with an 18.5" smooth barrel will run you right at $190 - $210. This is the typical "cop" shotgun. Also Maverick 88 barrels are compatible with Mossberg 500 model barrels within gauge and capacity... This gives you a lot of options, accessories and spare parts to work with if you decide you want to do more with it later. Buy a couple of boxes of Federal 12 GA Low Recoil Tactical 00 Buckshot. The 88 will handle 3" magnums but skip it. That macho bullshit beats the hell out of your shoulder. If 2 3/4" 00 Buck won't do the job, you should have brought a machine gun...
But seriously, get an 88 - You'll like it, it will be cheap, easy to shoot, it's well made and they do well even if mistreated and are never cleaned.
Just jacking a round into the chamber on these has been known to send bad guy running the other way. It's an ominous sound. Not to mention it will clear a hallway in a heartbeat and will make hamburger out of anyone who earns the business end of it.
