Back pressure is a myth, there is only velocity and scavenging effects.

Getting rid of the cat wouldn't help the issue, not to mention you're needlessly polluting.

i got it with a blown head gasket, took the ebay route and replaced it again 4 months later. now that i got a felpro set with ARP's @ 85 ft lbs. the plugs were fine when i took it down the second time. the O2 sensor on the other hand pluged or un pluged doesn't make a difference. but i have no check engine light and in my opioion the car runs fine but this is my first supra so to some of you it might run like crap. i was hoping to meet some guys from my area that could maybe tell me if it runs ok for what it is.

yah i'm also new to the supra seen, but i love my car and am diving in head first. as for the o2 sensor not making a difference-that seems kinda odd- it tells the ecu the a/f ratio (maybe your check eng light is burnt out, does it come on with key on on-eng off) i'm clearly not the one that can help you, maybe the carbon is normal not sure, i dont notice it on mine, i got no cat, and my car is black but cant see any carbon, but i got my own problem lol.

i'm sure a more experience guy will give his 2 cents.

Well first off were talking about a turbo car here they all put out a little black smoke. Do you floor it alot?... second were talking about an older car how many miles are on it...? does it burn oil?... if so check your valve seals they might be worn i had that problem on my first supra it was n/a but these are things to think about.. i wouldnt be worried about a little carbon my car has a fresh engine like 8000 miles and i have open exhaust on mine and it puts out a little carbon on my bumper too ... as long as its not like blowing white or blue smoke i think your fine dude....

A longer exhaust pipe could help, but from the sounds of it you may be running excessively rich or burning oil (as mentioned).

Three questions: First, can you post a pic (from the side) of your bumper so we can see just how short the pipe is. Second, what's your mileage like? Third, How often do you drive with the throttle pressed down 70% or more?

Oh, and answer Dumbo's question... Have you read the plugs and if so, how do they look?

i'll try to get some picks up but i can tell you now is 4-5 inches from the end of the bumper under the car. second it has 232,000 miles on it i have to put like a quart every 2-3 weeks i don't drive it hard being it has alot of miles and it's a n/a, i mean a stock civic si can kick my ass...lol the plugs look good, they aren't black or filed out looking none of them are wet of gunked up like it's burning oil in that cylinder. i may just be worring about something that is normal but was wondering. i may change the O2 sensor for the hell of it. the check engine light works, it comes on when i start the car then goes off.

a quart every 2-3 weeks!!!(thats like a litre ehh)( if it aint going on the ground, its going through the engine, but at 232kmiles, id say thats pretty normal, valvle stem seal, maybe some blow by, hows the the crank vents, coming out of the valve covers(PCV) but if you got carbon coming out the tail pipe, id say your burning it, let'er buck-clean your bumber-till you rebuild/replace:biglaugh:
still kinda weird your plugs looks good though

thats my thoughts

any one else agree-disagree:aigo:

no smoke when i start it, i just had the head reworked a few months ago (April) had new seals put in and milled when going whit the new gasket on round 2. i say a quart that offen, i checked it 2 weeks ago and the last time i did was in may. so i guess it's not really that bad. the cylinder walls were ok to the touch i could only fell some groves in number 2 cylinder. but it still has an ass load of miles. i cleaned out the cam covers when i had them off taking all the carbon that was in the baffles where teh pvc goes through. all that as far as i can tell is working good.

you could get some clear plastic film used to guard the front of the car against rock chips and bugs and put it on your back bumper, just something to let you wipe the carbon away.

hmm i dont know what to say man, sorry. if it aint leaking, or smoking a bit on startup, id say the eliminates valve stems and external leaks, as for the PCV i meant maybe its leaking out of there externally(on valve covers), but i cant see it leaking that much(you would notice) as for cylinder walls i know proper cross thatch is important but not sure how to test, other than doing it on rebuild. maybe compression test?? ne ways dream time. thanks man there TSW, need a centre cap know where to get one?!?!

good luck
