got the white rouge done on the valve cover! a little touch up and then on goes the paint. I had to stop because my die grinder started to catch on fire...literally.

I must say I am quite happy with the image quality I was able to get out of it. getting better at this!

It's been a long time coming, but they're done. My roomate gave me a hand tonight and painted the head for me along with the AFM etc...looks great! here are the covers! The black paint is POR-15 engine enamel too. everything that is steel on the engine got POR-15'd, aluminum painted too. :D :D

Gonna clearcoat em Steve?

I want to see how long the bar aluminum lasts. this is the only polished part in the engine bay, so it should be easy to maintain.

I have clearcoated things n the past with the best clearcoat I could find I used glisten PC made by restomotive (POR-15 guys). super expensive...I had my wheels, 5m valve covers and P/S reservoir coated in it. It's held up very well but after 3 years on my wheels...it ultimately failed and had to be removed. I blame this on me not using the AP-120 acid etch before applying the clearcoat (I did NOT want to etch my freshly polished covers)....but the fractures in the clearcoat started from the rubbing bead of the tire.

regardless, I want to see what happens with this... how quick it oxidizes. It will be easy to re-polish and clearcoat at a later date if I wish. for now, it will get wax.

tomorrow I will have to remove the oil pan again. I sealed it up, but it must have shifted on the final torquing pass, because I can hear it nicking part of the rotating assembly. when test fitting, I did not have to remove anything...it fit perfectly. I would assume it just shifted a bit...

Jamie and my roomate shawn are going to start pulling the 5m tomorrow while I finishing assembling the 7m.

I started working at 7:00 today on the crank scraper. I wasted $40 worth of gasket maker and spent, well....an incredibly long time fitting the crank scraper. i! actually took three tries (sealed and torqued) before it fit perfectly....and that means scraping, sanding and brake cleaning each time, sealant and finally torquing all the bolts...

the problem was, even though it looked good when test fitting, when torqued with the gasket maker...the scraper "floated" a little bit and contact on the #5 rod journal on the crank...on the cast section. On the final attempt I clearanced the part properly and torqued all 20 bolts down with fresh gasket maker...I allowed it to cure and scraped off the access. Then, I applied gasket maker to the plan using IJ's washer trick to prevent pan warpage. Hopefully this will be leak free....I used "the right stuff" gasket maker...

fits great now and turns smoothly!

I'm receiving the most support from my UNBELIEVABLE friends...unbelievable. Jamie (sawbladz) showed up around 8:30 and shawn, my roomate got up about the same time too. Shawn finished re-wrapping my wiring harness and then Jamie and Shawn tore into the 5m. I basically didn't lay a finger on the 5m and they pulled the hole engine for me. I jumped in from time to time but basically I spent my time messing with the oil pan situation. There was no messing around on their parts... just lots of hard, consistent work! shawn yanked all the non-working A/c stuff out too, while jamie tied up the rest of the work on the engine.

my other friend nick showed up a little later and helped clean things and guide the engine out of the car. I can't thank you guys enough...They're coming back tomorrow to help prep the bay for the 7m!

with the short block done, I'm off to install the head tomorrow...mount the catch can and relocated the fuel filter.

shawn is planning to replace the oil seals in the tranny for me too! progress is being made very fast! this would have taken me FOREVER if it wasn't for their help.

more pictures of an assembled 7m tomorrow....but for now, engine pull pictures!

had a great day today... lots more work done by all! same guys back again, and tons of stuff done! shawn worked on the tranny, intake insulators and helped with the motor. nick cleaned allll day and painted the parts that needed it! and jamie was jumping around doing different projects, and most importantly, making sure I didn't make a mistake on the engine assembly.

shawn finished touching up my intake manifold insulator. I also made one for the TB so the throttle linkage etc still line up.

Excellent work.

Just a few things to do or think about:

1) If it was me I would remove that metal gasket in the spark plug valley. Really serves no usefull purpose & makes it very hard to clean up any oil that may seep there in the future.
2) You have the same adjustable cam gears that I have.
Make sure the bolts are not binding to the four studs at the back.
3) While the engine is out of the car are you going to degree the cams? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MsqA-C3vGI
A lot easier to do now than when its in the car.
4) Cut the plastic top cam gear cover in half so you can easily obtain access to the cam gears.
You cannot remove it otherwise without loosening the thermostat housing & loosing coolant. It is still safely held by the two top bolts.
Thanks to Amichie for this tip as it has saved me a lot of time whilst playing with camshaft timing.

1. That decorative cover looks sick and comes off with 4 bolts in no times. Not really a big deal. Plus, there should be no need to clean out oil on a fresh build or there are other problems to be looked at.

2. We clearanced the bolts already...what a pain in the ass.

3. I dunno if he will or not. I slept in and am still sitting on my couch while they are probably putting the engine in. Sue me...it's the long weekend and I went to bed at 4. LOL

4. Good idea. He refuses to do a custom lexan cover and the clear ones available are damned expensive. This is a good option and I will run it past him.

It's not a cover, it's a gasket. It seals the oil galley plugs (the plugs that hold it down). without some kind of seal they're leak. Need at least o-rings...
