thanks guys.

NewWest: thanks for hte compliments. I definatley will be sending my injectors out to be cleaned. New oil pump is a must aswell, I plan on getting a genuine toyota unit, unshimmed.

dudeman - thanks for the suggestion. main priority is getting it in and running. I'll see how the budget is when the time comes to consider it.

adjuster: thanks for the compliments, it means a lot to me, coming from you!

The diffs in mk2s are inheritantly noisy. after 40,000km they start to whine....you just have to accept it. synthetic oil helps in the mean time. Amsoil series 2000 did wonders for mine. The whine doesn't mean it will fail soon...every mk2 i've ridden in has whined that being said, they stock LSD does not like 300hp applied to it for a long time. a true trac LSd can solve this.

my U-joints are on their last legs, so a 1-piece may be in order. I agree a flywheel would make a bigger difference since it has a larger radius than the driveshaft.

Comp cam valve springs are on the list to buy.

boring update, but I got some goodies. The pic is self explanatory but that ECU is a Japanese spec unit. It's designed for no EGR. you can see billy's shifter bushing there too.

axmtdi.jpg

I also got another large box of parts. It contains the front sump 91 cressy oil pan, hard lines, thermostat housing, sensors, alternator brack and various nuts and bolts I am missing.

I just paid for an AFM, igniter assembly, fuel injector resistor and another ECU to rip the "U" connector out of. There's a few more random things, but basically I think I have all the "used" engine parts taken care of. it's all buying new parts and machine work from here on out (hoses, thermostat, rings bearings etc.)

good progress still. wiring isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but confusing none the less. I wish I had my harness in front of me so I could actually see what I'm dealing with.

that's it for now.

Hey bud.. im doing the same swap as you.. accept my mk2 isnt in nearly the shape as yours... yours is fucking beautiful..

Anyways.. i am full of knowledge on the mk2 7m/7mgte build.. my dad wrote a book on it..

Ill start with a few pointers..

I dont know if you know any of these yet.. i didnt read the whole thread.. i was too excited to find a fellow mk2 7m enthusiast...

you have to use the 5m pan.

You have to modify the oil pickup from the 7m to be shorter, cut some off, reweld, and check for clearance.

Make a sub harness.. not everything will connect.. The mk2 fuel pump is supposedly run off of the AFM.. BUT... i would highly suggest taking out your 5m fuel pump, and use the 7m fuel pump, to eliminate this issue..

You will need a filter relocation kit.. the 7m oil filter is in the way of the engine mounts..

You can make a "sub Harness" out of everything you have, if you have good harnesses.

If you have any other questions.. feel free to PM me.. i have so much info on this swap..

hey ryan, I'm aware of these things but some suggestions are incorrect.

- not necessarily a 5m pan is required...it needs to be a "front sump pan" 85+ mk2 5m pans are slightly deeper. all cressida oil pans are front sump too.

- There's no need to use the 7m oil pump as it is the same internally as the later (85-86 instead of 82-84) 5m pump, which you can bolt on with the associated hardline. In my case, I purchased a 91 cressida oil pan which is front sump. The cressida oil pump for the same model year fits perfect too. just make sure you use the associated pipes.
My setup is 87 supra motor, 91 cressida front sump pan, 91 cressida oil pump (new) with the cressida hardlines.

The oil dipstick will have to be relocated to the front "bung" and the old one plugged with a bolt aswell.

- I'll be making a sub harness, hence the wiring books. I have all connectors collected to make it plug and play, so no cutting of any mk2 wires is required. The 5m will go right back in if needed.

-i'll be using the mk2 fuel pump setup, it will be more than adequate for a 7mge....capable to just above 250whp I'm told.

- oil filter relocation kit is not necessary with a 7mge. The motor mounts do stradle the oil filter mount, just below it. It will hit the motor mount on a 7mgte, since it has the 90 degree filter adapter on it. good thing is that restrictive adapter isn't on there.

Many more small details, which I should post pictures of and cover along the way. I've been researching this for a long time....I shouldn't need to ask any questions :naughty::evil2:

thanks for the offer!

Great work! Thanks for the porting pictures... it's good to have a double-check reference. I'm just in the middle of porting my own head and I took a ton of pictures. It's up on supraclub.ca

Anyway, I'd like to know if you sanded/ported the valve guides where they protrude into the air tract? Just at the very top. It looks like that sharp angle would be a point of turbulence, but I'm hesitant to grind the sides before a second opinion.

Edit: I found this site with tons of pictures.... looks like they did it: http://users.tpg.com.au/users/loats/technical/7mge/headporting.html

I just wanted to point out that I've had 9 mk2s and never had a noisy differential. Even the 4.30 that grenaded in my 1st mk2 didn't make any noise, it just went BOOM.

Everything looks great though Steve, as usual :)

thanks everyone!

Heckler - The valve guides in the supra are quite long, and one of the reasons the valvetrain is quite durable on our heads...they can be cut down, but I'd consider that a race only modification, since it can significantly reduce the life of your seat/valve. I chose to radius the edges as best I can with a carbide bit and some sanding rolls...just basically smoothing out the sharp edge, but without reducing the length.

Tanya: thanks! was just going by what I had heard from some people that have owned supras for a very long time, sounds like some people get lucky though.

CSnow: thanks! Pituala and Yotaholic have amazing 1J mk2s, they are a fantastic motor to be mated with the lighter chassis.

Ron: I'm sure you will! I usually make it to every meet once the car comes out of storage!

don't worry guys, I'm still working on it! I'm finally working so income is starting to flow in. I'm trying my best to get everything ready to go for the new parts and machine work. I bought some chem dip and went to down with my wire brush, simple green and a touch of polishing compound.

All of these are pics of the original 180,000km 7mge pistons pulled from the motor.

Started with this...

I'm pretty happy! saved me a lot of money. I'll mic them soon but they seem to have very little wear. There is some scuffing but it seems light and you can't feel it with your finger tips. should be ok.

just a little more proof you can get outstanding results with almost no money if you take your time and plan things out!

stay tuned,
Steve

some discolouration...it looks and feels smooth. what appears to be pitting is not.

does this look unacceptable to you? acceptable being less than perfect.
