The little cup on the bottom of the shifter is a very precise fit. Don't force it, it will go in perfect if you can get it straight in.

long story short...it barely runs and throttle does not effect anything.

had a couple wiring problems...fixed. at one point the timing belt skipped about 4 teeth. I fixed the cam timing. I forgot to bolt the ground onto the back of the head.

the intake manifold and plugs stink of fuel badly. I'm betting it's a weak connection at the IG circuit coming out of the ignition switch (key) since that wire is spliced with three others, and it's just tied together/taped. specifically the one that feeds power to the igniter assembly. Since it's definatley not burning the fuel it has, and there is no way the cam timing can be drastically out (the motor sounds like a high compression air pump, and takes muscle to turn over) i'd bet it's ignition related.... I'm hoping I can fix it tonight....or I can't drive the supra to the meet!!

IT RUNS!!! like a champ too. everything functions like stock. engine turns over twice and fires right up. soldering of connections tomorrow (only a few) and then time to go for a rip!!!!

I'm so excited you guys have no idea!!

Jim king and steve brecht stopped by to give me a hand, jim went over my wiring with a fine tooth comb and everything checked out ok (sloppy, but the correct connections). In the end, the not running issue (that I've been having for the past week that I didn't post about) was attributed to inconsistent spark due to a sloppy connection, combined with incorrect ignition timing.

the engine purrs just like a 7m should...with lots of oil pressure!!

the powersteering pump is loud and I'll have to source another one. it doesn't seem to be leaking, so it should last awhile. everything looks good!! pictures and videos after this weekend!!

I should have a timeslip by saturday ;)

BIG THANKS to Jim King and Steve Brecht for helping me push through to the end when I felt like giving up!

car ran fantastically all weekend. just tinkering to work out now...and I LOVE tinkering! it's all fun stuff now...

85mph trap speeds tell me she's missing top end power. I definatley need to play with the game gears as it feels like there is way too much power down low...it pulls quite hard from only 1500rpm! it really seems like the powerband has been shifted about 1000rpm lower.

you got it joe! thanks guys!!!!

i'm really happy with how it turned out so far. I'm pretty proud of myself as there were a lot of firsts with this job.

-first engine replacement
-first engine rebuild
-first engine rewire/swap

shows you if you have the drive with a little bit of mental background, you can do anything you set your mind to!! I had nobody beside me holding my hand, I just had the manuals and did a lot of reading...used my head and it seemed to work out great!

the engine is still running fantastically smooth- you an only hear the injectors ticking at idle. it has no leaks and no bad sounds (aside from the powersteering pump...). the exhaust smells normal, with no oil loss or burning. To say i'm proud is an understatement....and I came home with the show and shine trophy for the mk2 class again to boot!

I can't wait to tinker and squeeze some more power out of the thing. a little more clean up and zipties...throw the adrenaline motorsports electric fans in there and drive happy!!

engine is good, suspension and brakes are sorted....just some touch up things next year and enjoy the car FINALLY!!! I feel pretty happy about the car's condition right now. Just hit every supra meet I can and drive with a smile on my face!

Good to hear that the car is going fine & you are happy with all the hard work.
If you have advanced both cams 3 degrees than you have a bit more torque up to around 4000 but the power will start to drop sharply after 5000, probably loosing around 10hp at the top end.
Just retard the cams a degree at a time until you recoup your top end without sacraficing too much down low.
Remember that 1 cam degree = 2 crank degrees.
Now you will appreciate why I suggested to cut the cam cover in half as it makes it very easy to do adjustments with the gears.
I also changed all my studs to hex head as the originals are more awkward to work with if used a lot.

What are your compression readings?

Are you getting a slight 'bump' in power around 4200rpm? that should be when ACIS kicks in. If you are shifted too low in the power band, you might not be getting much help from ACIS, either.

oooo yes black cat. I appreciate that suggestion more than you know. Being nearly 4 degrees off, I'm sure it would make a significant difference! I can't wait to do some tweaking! the car acts EXACTLY as you describe. Busting the tires loose with ease at about 4000rpm and then no power whatsoever. I will Definatley be cutting the timing cover as you suggest.

acis sounds like it's working. George said "you put VTEC in this thing?" lol.

I'll get some proper pictures and videos once I have the kinks worked out and it's in a presentable condition.

in the mean time, here are some pictures from the meet taken by others!:
