timing wont set at 10btdc?

180 degress out. Ever heard of TDC compression on # 1 cylinder. Take #1 plug out and turn engine over till air comes out the spark plug hole. If not then you can be 180 degrees out. Runs but not right. Some very basic things can indicate correct timing. Like engine vacuum readings. Maybe you could tell us what your vacuum is. i bet every one that has adjusted timing also see the vacuum change as you move the cps. Or you could start a few more threads. If you are On TDC #1 clyinder and cps installed correctly. The bolt is almost centered in adjustment slot and 18 to 20" of vacuum you are golden. Are even sure your timing belt is set up right.

ever time i try n time it and i start it up with te1 e1 jump and let it worm up i put the timing light on it and its way before the markings on the cover and vac when driving is in between 10 and 15 and if i know my oi seals n my turbo are bad it smoke a lil no and then

At an idle your engine vacuum vacuum should be 18 -20" on proper running engine. If the idle and timing does not change while jumping TE1 and E1. You can probaly will never see 10degrees of timing with timing light. That is ok. The car running at idle warm will probably be 15 to 20 degrees. If you have 18-20" of vacuum at idle and the bolt in adjustment slot is about center of slot timing is very close. Close enough that if it drives fine don't worry about it.

1. Verify that you have the CAM timing correct. This will affect everything.

2. Verify your#1 cylinder is at tdc, by removing the #1 spark plug, and placing something like a chopstick in there. Rotate the motor by turning the crank clockwise with a 19mm socket until your reference stick reaches its highest point.

3. NOW verify that the cps is installed correctly.

4. Once you verify the #1 cylinder is at tdc, you can also verify that the crank pulley mark is at zero.
It IS possible to have a bad crank pulley, where the outer section has shifted, and no longer represents tdc.

Actually I have a similar issue, when I set the motor to TDC with piston 1 at the top of the stroke and the CPS to TDC the mark on the crank pulley shows up about an inch to the left of the time marks on the timing cover. I do plan on removing the CPS cover and looking at the insides but right now my car is in the shop getting a new clutch installed.

ok so today i think my true tdc maybe it shows 10 on the crank markings but looks like thats its highest point does that sound to far off? and it didnt fix my timing showing 20 25 btdc and when i try the hole one click back on the cps car will barrley run but when i just line up markings and put it in its better?

Sure it is Backlash, this is 4 pages of not being able to set static timing, I've love to see them time a quad cam engine..

Everytime I've done anything with a CPS or distributor.. I followed the TSRM and didn't even have to move it to get 10* lol

Yea I did that, set the motor to TDC, set the CPS to TDC, put the car in diag mode, start it up let it warm up, check with timing light and the mark is still about an inch to the left of the timing cover markings.
