One thing to keep in mind...the Winchester and Remington both use single extractors while the Mossberg uses a dual setup. This is far superior in the fact that if you have over expansion in the chamber, the extractor will not slip. Also the Mossberg uses and elevator system instead of a ramp system for the action. I find it more reliable on faster pumps. I have a 870 7shot as well but my Mossberg is my go to gun.

I have these shots in my gun in this order...first shot is blank usually, second is number 6 bird shot, third is 4 buck, fifth is 000 buck, sixth is 000 buck, and last resort for o-shit moments is 3 inch slug. That is in my 870 though. Usually got my Mossberg similar but it is only 5 shot.

My thoughts on the double extractor:
- If the chamber size is correct, there can be no over expansion of the shell....I have never seen a Win 1300 or Rem 870 fail to extract.
- Using a mag load (which can cause over expansion) in a home defense round is not a good idea.

One thing I have done to my shotguns is have the forcing cone lengthened. It reduces felt recoil...a good thing when teaching a female to shoot the Defender. For a hunting gun, it reduces flat spots on the pellets along the outside of the shot cup...the "squeeze" is more gradual. Better pattern is the result.

That is true...but I have also had many cheap bird shot loads over expand in the 870 but not in the Mossberg. Not saying the 870 is bad, I just think the Persuader and similar is a little more reliable.

This load will do a number on someone at that range and I don't risk a pellet going through a wall and hitting one of my family.

The other reason I was leaning toward a shotgun... I'll start looking around and see what I can find.

*edit*
Oh, and thanks for the advice.

Hey any of you guys know where I can get some G.I. m14 20 round magazines? I know there's a shortage and all, but figured I would ask in here. I really, really need them. You can guess why.

Good luck finding genuine GI M-14 mags...here's a good read from Fulton Armory on identifying them and good alternatives:

I've shot the Taiwanese magazines (they are still made) and they function quite well. The only real difference is they are blued vs the parkerized GI mags. These are new (made on US supplied GI machinery), not remanufactured.

As far as shotguns go, whats a good place to look?

I've got a Dick's, Gander Mtn, and such right down the street from me... or should I stick w/ a strictly gun shop?

ID what you want and get it at the place with the best price ;)
The good thing about the big retailers is they have sales...be patient and you can get a good price.

As January draws nearer, I have realized that I might not be able to get the CCW that I wanted, as we may all see the end of the 2nd ammendment. What I would like to do is pick up a rifle for target shooting and possible hunting, but I would like something that I could pick up ammo anywhere, for a very reasonable price. I read some reviews on the Hi-Point carbine, and am quite interested. The only gripe that I could find about them, is that the pistols are bulky, and not ideal for CC. The prices new are VERY reasonable, but I am wondering if anyone here had any experiance with the brand in general, or the rifle itself. I love the fact that it takes pistol ammo, as I can use it in the pistol range in my town, no need to travel 45 min to the 100 yard range.

How was it?

Which one? the 9mm carbine was fun to shoot and I can hit bulls eye repetitively open sights. Another buddy of mine install a red dot so that was cool. The compact pistol is pretty accurate especially the price you pay, only downside is the it has more kick due to it be a more affordable gun. I do believe they have lifetime warranty if you need them cleaned and/or replaced. I recommend them if you're on a budget.

I'm finally a pistol owner (my rifle is long gone). I bought a used Stoeger Series 8000 Cougar 9mm semi-auto with 2 15 round double stack mags.

I've got the same pistol, and the first one I bought, too. :)

9mm is just fun at the range, and it's a comfortable shooter. Even my wife has no problem emptying a magazine. It's great for use in the home, but I had issues trying to carry it and ended up buying a second pistol for CC. Post up after you get a chance to take it to the range.
