My local Toyo-dealer did a direct inquiry in Japan.

The weight difference is 200lbs!!! And that´s ALOT!

Methinks your "Toyo-dealer" is full of it. As per Toyota, the sport roof model weighs 86lbs more than the hardtop.

EDIT: Side note, MKIV targas were only 26lbs heavier than the hardtop. Aluminum targa FTW, haha.

The lightest MKIII supra is a N/A Manual non sport package 1986.5 hardtop in the US that would be a MA70, However the same model / year / setup GA-70 I imagine would be the overall winner of the lightest. anyone have the weight specs of the 1986.5 GA70? hardtop?

200LBS of stiffing bars is a lot of extra uniframe sheet steel. I would think 86lbs would be just about right.

On a side note, I've actually been wondering about the strength of a targa vs. hardtop in the event of a roll-over accident. Would the targa be as safe as a hardtop?

This may be of interest, I have just finished stripping down my write off Aero and cut a few repair panels off it for others.

You can see really clearly the additional bracing in the Aero shells & personally I think these cars, with the roof on are stiffer than the standard hard tops because of all this additional bracing.

The gauge of metal on these MKIIIs is quite something.:icon_cool

Additional rear arch bracing.

Additional A pillar bracing where it meets the floor.

This is one strong car! B pillar.

Jeff, do you have a reliable number then as the hardtop is concerned?

all you got to do is look inside the driver side door. it should tell you what your car weighed rolling of the factory line. my 88 targa is like 4060 or something like that i'd have to go look.

with half a tank of gas my 89 NA hardtop weighed in at 3520, all stock plus about 60 lbs of sub/amp. no driver.

with me and a friend, we tipped the scales at 3900.

That's probably the Gross Vehicle weight, which is if the car is fully loaded with 4 passengers and luggage in the back.

Reliable number for what? Curb weight? I suppose I can look. Turbo or N/A, manual or auto, Canada or USA model?

That has nothing to do with what your car actually weighs, well it does, but not like that.

Like was said, that is the maximum weight when the car is fully loaded.

Well at least one person got it right lol.
A heavily optioned 87 supra turbo hardtop has a curb weight of 3590 pounds according to Car@Driver. So add 86 pounds and that's the targa weight. Later years will vary slightly.

Yeah, the curb weight. It´s a european (swiss) model. Turbo + auto.

Any data on that?

who needs a/c when you have a targa.

on the hottest summer days (i didn't have a/c) taking the top off did NOT help... in fact i think it made the situation worse... i'm not really sure how... prolly had something to do with direct sunlight... where as a top will at least partially shield you from the sun
