So far this thread is 5 pages of sort of hear-say, good info, but nothing really concrete. I'm sort of less concerned about overall weight, because of all the weight reductions I will be doing. I've already removed about 325lbs from the vehicle according to the weights listed in the TRDSupra.com weight index but if there is a definate structural advantage of the hardtop over the targa I would be all over that. However is there any concrete evidence of structural rigidity of the hardtop vs. targa? I hear people talking about it "definately feeling" but feelings are a tricky thing. You can 'feel' what you want

you'd be surprised.... i went from a 89 targa turbo (fully loaded) to a base model '87 hardtop with the whole drivetrain from the '89.... i was very pleased with the difference it made... if you ask me, i'd say the difference is phenomenal... but that's just my $.02 IMO the '89 felt like a battle tank compared to the 87 hardtop

look at the pics of the chopped up targa model earlier in this post... i'd say that is concrete evidence if anything is.... however... the targa top still allows the chassis to flex... so IMO caged out hardtop FTW

Reliable number for what? Curb weight? I suppose I can look. Turbo or N/A, manual or auto, Canada or USA model?

That has nothing to do with what your car actually weighs, well it does, but not like that.

Like was said, that is the maximum weight when the car is fully loaded.

Hardtop if you plan to race the car, targa if you plan to use it to cruise around. It weighs less, and feels more stable. IMO.

Take both cars and drive up a driveway (with a steep incline) at an angle. Hear the targa creek and twist vs the hardtop take it fine. Thats enough for me.

Enough for me too. Boy how I want the Targa for the rare times I'm cruising, but on the track I'm gonna need the hard top I think. :3d_frown:

Its evidence of a bunch of added heavy metal but its not evidence of rigidity. I never hear my targa creak or anything. However I believe i'll stick with the orginal plan of transfering EVERYTHING over to my hardtop

I´ve heard my targa creak a couple of times and afaik not only targas, but also convertibles have a lot of more material but still lack the issue of torsional stiffness - there is no such car --> (targa, convertible) which can be as stiff as a hardtop.

I´m sure I´m gonna get the white hardtop. That way I will have a targa for cruisin´ and a hardtop for racing. Couldn´t be better, actually. :)

Strange thing is that it´s a super clean one which only had 1 owner before I bought it and the body didn´t not have an impact before...

Can´t tell ya why it creaks from time to rime.

Do what I said. If you dont hear it, you're a lier. I've owned 3 targa cars, and been in 10+ on the same driveway, and they all do it. Only ones that haven't are the hardtops.

Thread topic "Targa vs. Non-Targa - weight & performance "
Solution to the topic:
If you want performance get a hardtop
If you want a car for show or cruise by the beach in socal get a targa

I saw your cross sections mine looks identical on the hardtop.
& there is way more flex in the targa the more power your car haves the more flex.
The only way to counter is leave the top in or cage but then your adding way more weight to get nearly the same rigidness as a hardtop.

Just to proove there is more flex even the MFG knows this why else would the install algment pins on the top of the doors for the targa models only.
They keep the door aligned so the flex doesnt pop them open & align them so when your parked on an uneaven surface the door lines up better when you shut the door.

Ive owned two targa cars and one hardtop, theres no doubt the hardtop felt better when doing spirited driving but you could really car less when its a nice sunny day and your top is off:love: of the car that is i may live in tenn but i do drive with my shirt on:biglaugh:

Ive never heard my targa creak. I have heard a targa supra creak before however the targa was not bolted down properly.
