100 pounds is alot really. I still have no idea what an MK3 weighs, some people say 3400, others say 3800 etc. Guess it depends on what trim it is. Id think the lightest would be hardtop, 7mge/w58, base model.. R154 is quite a bit heavier I know that.. add a full turbo setup and that's probably another 40-50 pounds more than a 7MGE.

I posted all MA70 models from an old TSB about 7 years ago. I scanned it and posted it.

3450-3640, depending on engine, trans, (A340E), roof, options such as TEMS, ABS. The heaviest being a car like mine.

On a side note, I have had two sport roofs, and 3 hard tops. With the top in, you can't really tell a difference between a targa with the roof in, and a hard top.

And if you want a high performance sports car, you have a bad choice in foundation. Toyota built the car to be well rounded, not hard edged. Then again, if you want to gut it and put in race suspension parts, have at it. A member here has his down around 3000.

Oh yeah, it doesn't squeak. Bad cars that were abused over time squeak.

Then you're lying that you dont hear it or you're oblivious to it.
I have a raked drive way and like I said NEVER heard my targa EVER creak.

So far thats 3 of us, and you can rely on that fact I am most certianly NOT lying. I've also had 2 very quite customer's cars I know havent creaked either. They were all 100% stock and very well kept. Very quiet inside while driving. Thats what got me paying attention to them

Ok maybe a driveway isn't a proper explination of the hill. Its ~ a 30* angle. rises 4 feet in ~ 5 foot drive. Even a stock car cant take it straight, you have to go side ways. Suspension fully flexes and the the targe car twists. You can hear it. The hardtop does not. The creaks dont really come from the top, more of the side windows as they readjust on the rubber. Every targa car has done it, ranging from a 75k mile car to a 220k mile car. But the 180k hardtop and 240k hardtop were fine.

I've never heard my targa creek for the past 7 years.

Anyway, man I'd probably trade my turbo targa car for a na hardtop that was clean and pre-89.... just cause I always wanted the lightest MK3 model.

ive owned both, 1rst a hardtop than a targa, I had full suspension upgrades on both and no matter what i do, the targa does not feel concrete as the hardtop did. Both has tokico illumina shocks, eibach springs, front and rear strut tower braces, suspension techniques sway bars rear bar is on the tightest, racing hart type c2 rims 17 x8 and x9, bf Goodrich traction comp t/a's.

But i sold the hardtop to get the look of the targa. Like a clean supra, dropped, on any major city boulevard with the top off and some nice deep dish rims, will always cause heads to look twice, A hardtop, not so much.

That´s why I kept my targa but I still want a hardtop.

Targa for posing - hardtop for racing! :D

did the same with mine... heard afterwards that you can use dry ice. lay it on the sound deadening for a bit and it all comes out in once peice later.
1 piece?! I havent tried it because the consensus was it'll harned it so you can chip it way, instead of having to fight gum. But my sound deadening material was already all hard and brittle and chipped off anyways so I didnt need the dry ice. But 1 piece?! How does that work exactly? Pry up one side of it and then you can pry the whole sheet of it off?

.........ok, I have an 87 targa and an 86.5 hardtop

I can tell you all right now I drive both cars and spend equal amounts of time with both

what ever you said about the hardtop being noodly and stuff is just wrong, WRONG WRONG WRONG.

if you tighten the screws on your targa correctly and use locktite and everything: YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE SQUEEKS

I just finished doing this and I go over 4-5 speed bumps daily to get out of my apartment, my targa doesn't squeek anymore (all new bolts, locktite, new targa top)

I take my hardtop out on the exact same route to school or any other place.

all I can say is that the 2 cars feel exactly identical as far as chassis rigidity go.

however, if you take the top off the targa, oh boy......its another story

that being said, if I was going to go for a race car build. picking up a targa to do the job is retarded and I would go with a hardtop

however, for a 600whp street car, I would rather have a targa top, because I live in CA and have plenty of good weather (to counter the effect of the retards who make our laws). anything more, especially for drag racing, get the hardtop, I don't have enough power in my hardtop (which is NA, and probably running on 4 cylinders) vs my 1jz 320whp targa,

that's my 2rubles

It just depends on the individual car..

my 89 feels like it's ready to fall apart because it's always had the top off, sometimes I don't put it on for months (garage kept), but it's nice and stiff with it on..

my 86.5 feels super rigid, because the previous owner silicone'd it shut for most of it's life. It has more miles than my 89, but is super stiff, I actually took the top off for the first time in years when we were checking it out to buy it...

my 92 is ultra rigid, and I feel very confident going over speed bumps, but the hatch squeaks SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much, it makes me wonder if hardtops are supposed to be stiffer...

And WTF on the loctite? Use ANTISIEZE on the targa bolts, not loctite LOL

The leaking in a targa top can be managed. when you drive a hard top supra, then your just driving a supra. but when you drive a targa top supra with it off, you can feel the difference in driving, you feel superior, and DAMN its a good feeling.
