Ok, guys. I´ve tried the search but it´s been more than unfruitful.

Does anyone have reliable experienced data in means of weight difference and performance?

I´m about to get a white Non-Targa which is in great shape and would be a great project car.

Hope someone can help me out as much as possible.

Thanks!

As far as the engine is concerned I know that there are no differences BUT only 100 pounds less? I thought it would be more than that?! :icon_surp

100 pounds is alot really. I still have no idea what an MK3 weighs, some people say 3400, others say 3800 etc. Guess it depends on what trim it is. Id think the lightest would be hardtop, 7mge/w58, base model.. R154 is quite a bit heavier I know that.. add a full turbo setup and that's probably another 40-50 pounds more than a 7MGE.

With the targa off, it does shimmy and rattle a lot more i can tell you that. But as far as performance with the top on i couldn't tell a difference. Top off i never really drove it "like that" just cruising around. Not sure on weight difference and cant tell you about performance with that cause i went from a crappy, leaking HG NA 5 speed with 200k miles to a fairly nice turbo targa auto with low miles.

Weight difference is ~ 150lbs..

The hardtop chassis is much stiffer then a targa car even with the targa on. I've owned both and want another hardtop.

My buddy always said that my 87 hard top was much more rigid than his targa even w/the top on.

All in all...the sunroof gets my vote! ;)

i love targas their look and the feel of driving with the top off. but in all honesty i might as well own a hardtop id still love it just as much, my targa doesnt come off all that often anymore.

Well, isn´t there any official data provided by Toyota concerning the weight of the hardtop?
I've been looking for that as well, cant find any. Not even at TRDsupra.com.
I just picked up an 88 hardtop shell parts car. I've been considering parthing the whole thing out and then transfering my drivetrain and suspension, subframes and EVERYTHING else essential from my 89 into the hardtop for the more desirable chassis. But swapping all that is really a pain in the ass and if the difference is just 150lbs, I could shave that elsewhere easily, however if the fruit is increased chassis rigidity then I'd be all for it. Plus its burgundy so after painting the outside black it would look much better than my current car with the white interior paint (note my ride is a stripped out track vehicle)

I did some research in the meantime, too. My local Toyo-dealer did a direct inquiry in Japan.

The weight difference is 200lbs!!! And that´s ALOT!

Nice, however i'm not looking at having to chisel all the sound deadening out of this thing again after having already done it to my current vehicle, ugh

I agree with tissimo, I've had a hard top and targa now, and I'd rather have another hard top. It is nice driving with the top out, but not worth the hassle.

Well, I´m gotta get one for me. I already got a targa but I was always thinking about getting a hardtop.

The one I am looking at is an original white edition one which has a bhg. It´s gonna be a great project.

Well looks like i'll be strippin down the 88 hardtop and transfering all my equipment over to it from the 89. Damn, so much work its gonna suck but a little extra weight saving and chassis rigidity is definatley tough to pass up
