targa off = wobbly car????

I drove around with my targa off today, and it seemed like every time I hit a bump or something I could feel the body like flexing.

I am curious if this is normal?

I would think it is normal b/c of not having the top bracing the car together
but I was just curious if its normal


I think I am going to make a X bar ( like the weezlwing, but not the weird shape) to bolt into there

If your Pre-89 your car will wobble with the targa off. in 89 the cars started to come with more reinforcement to prevent the car from flexing with the targa off.....

Please provide the source of your information, because my real-world experience completely contradicts what you wrote.

My '87 flexed much less than my current [late] '89. In fact, with front/rear STBs & the Do-Luc Rear X-bar, the '87 had almost zero wobble, while the '89 with the same mods installed, wobbles more than the '87 ever did without the mods installed. The chassis in both were/are cherry, as in no accident damage.

My 89 never suffered from the wobble/flex like so many other Supras I've ridden in. I was actually shocked one day when riding in a friend's Supra. When we went over a bump I could feel the whole dang car twist.

I still remember Larry's first impression of the Do-Luck bar - saying it was an 80% improvement over stock.

I too have the Do-Luck bar installed.

The X-brace would help keep the body from flexing but they're ugly IMO. If you want to get into it and not use a brace you can seam weld the car and add a few reinforcement bars.

Had an 88 targa that had "wobble" considerably more than my 89 targa. BUT the 89 is in much better shape as a whole car than the 88. Maybe check every bolt and nut on your car to make sure it's tight?

Perfectly normal.
I was shocked the first time I took mine off, too. But thats just how they are.
You can feel the whole body flex and bend over every bump and dip.

my 88 had a miserable suspension, and with the targa off everything flexed like a wet noodle. when i replaced everything (shocks, springs, front/rear strut bars, sway bars, floor bar, rack and pinion, wheel bearings, etc, etc, etc) it was like a band new car

Now with the targa off it was still way stiffer then when it was when everything was in poor condition and the roof was on.

i still want a targa bar that can CLOSE UNDER the targa. i dont have room to carry both a targa and the brace, nor do i want to switch.
But this is just me babbling on. Oh and my car feels good with the targa off with slight flex around the floor, which is why im going to make a custom floor bar.

I have an 88 Turbo with a targa top. If I'm really into it, sure I feel my Supra has a bit more flex with the top off, however it's not a big difference.

Just thinking outloud here, this could be bushings that are worn out, putting more stress on the frame of the car, making it seem like the targa's fault when in fact a new set of bushings, and some suspension work might make all the difference... just my humble oppinion. (yes, the targa does give some body support.)
