Here's a little MKIII owner story for you.

Whenever I go through a drive-thru at night I always turn off my headlights. I do this because my other car is very low to the ground and I'm so used to getting blinded I do it as an act of courtesy for those in front of me. It's been a habit for as long as I can remember. More strange is I also have a policy that if someone does it for me I'll pay for their meal. Why I do this is complicated to explain and not important but suffice to say I've only had to do it twice in 15 years.

Last night was the third time. I wasn't in my Supra but you guessed it: The car behind that shut 'em down for me was an 88 turbo. So if you're on here and were at a Wendy's in California last night my hat's off to you (and the pretty thing who was with you) for your thoughtfulness. Trust me, what you did was rare (at least in my experience) and I hope you enjoyed the free meal after you got past the surprise. And if you paid for it let me know because I have to trust the kids at the window not to pocket my cash ;)

Well, thanks, but it's not about me. It's about that Supra driver and how common courtesy seems to be dying in the US or at least in Cali. I try to reward it when I can, whether it's doing business with people or buying a couple of burgers for a stranger. I also do it in memory of someone close who is no longer among us, someone who instilled in me the value of random acts of kindness. Trust me, I'd prefer people were simply more courteous of each other without reward and if I had to do it often I'd quit ;)

That is truly awesome. yay for respect, and fellow supra drivers.
That's a great idea, I hate when i get the expedition behind me that likes to follow right in my sideview mirror blinding me.

ive never even really thought of that never had trouble with getting blinded... cant you just flick the switch on the mirror? mehh it kinda seems weird that you'd pay for his meal.. you got sensitive eyes or something?

A very good idea indeed JJ. I have a pretty good idea where you’re coming from. I lived in redneckvill Colorado for a number of years and 80% of the population drive big trucks on lifts. Most of my behind the wheel time was spent in cars, therefore I got blinded a lot. A lot of older trucks have poor low beams, so most people would just leave them on the bright, after 10 min in a drive through one gets real tired of it. As a courtesy I turn my lights off while sitting there as well, especially if I'm in a truck. Though I've never though to pay for the other guy meal if he showed me the same courtesy. That is a very good Idea.

I really hate when big trucks are driving behind me anywhere, my car is so low there lights shine right in the back window and even flipping the mirror doesn't always help. It still shines in your side mirrors and it's annoying, I never go through drive thru's but if I did, or if I do I'll remember to flip my lights off :)

i always did it for two reasons, actually. 1) because the lights on both my vehicles are very bright, and 2) because i hate being blinded when i try to get food. i've never had anyone do it for me, though. :( oh well. perhaps one day it'll come back around...

It's not just blinding. As the other poster pointed out an SUV or newer car with HID lighting can illuminate the entire interior of the target, especially if it's low to the ground. In a long line this can be annoying. Besides, me thinks you're missing the point....it's not my eyes that are sensitive.

I'm not suggesting anyone spring for food as that's just a quirk of mine and again, if I had to do it a lot I'd quit. Just killing your lights will set you apart from the masses. Grim, my experience is Canucks aren't as lacking in the courtesy department to begin with. It's one thing I like about them. After all, you're the guy who recently stopped to help a dead Supra right? I rest my case ;)

Shaeff: Good for you (why is it I'm not surprised?). But that's my point. It's rare isn't it? Sad...

That is awesome, Jetjock! I do the SAME THING! [I turn my headlights off when they aren't needed, especially in drive-throughs]. Really, it is horrible for us sometimes. I'm 5'11" and my car isn't lowered, but I constantly get lights directly in the eyes from the rear and side view, especially from trucks and SUVs. I often hang my hand out the window over my side-view mirror to block what I can. I try to give the courtesy that I can with my lights as well. I don't think truck guys "get it" at all - they have never been blinded by someone behind them!

Yea if I'm sitting at a traffic light ill turn them off for the people waiting across the way. Or if i think my lights would be in someones eyes id turn them off. I like your idea tho. I may start to pay for the people behind me in the drive thru if they turn their lights off for me. I do run into a few MKIIIs every once in a while. Everytime I do, we always get next to each other and drive for a few miles. Then give each other a head nod and wave and be on our way. Its not just my idea, we both just kind of line up and drive. It's pretty cool. And for this reason I love the supra community. Such friendly people. Unless you own an MKIV and are a member of SF lol.

JJ: You're wrong it is about you as an example!

I let people in front of me when they're trying to merge and always feel good if I get a wave of thanks whereas if they don't I'm a bit pissed.

It's that thing of treat people how you expect to be treated and it's contagious, now you've set an example maybe the guy that was behind you will do something the same and it will flow onto the next guy and so on!

Life has become a bit of a contact sport these days and it's nice to see some common courtesy!

That's a pretty cool idea. I would do that if my car didn't have DRL (daytime running lights) and I'm too lazy to hunt for the fuse and yoink it out. Sucks that most new cars now have DRLs too.

Awesome JetJock! I too try to be courteous with my headlights as I tend to get blinded very often because of my cars low height. I always give the car ahead of me plenty of space when driving on any road. I do not like tailgaters, especially big trucks and SUV's. When someone is tailgating me I will just try to speed up a little to make more room and if they follow just as closely I will give em a little brake check.

i truly do envy you. Its not jsut about "being nice", its about soo much more. Not even common curtesy, its simply what our supra communty has become.

I truly do envy you, and if you dont mind, i would like to cary on the tradition.

+1 for you sir.
