Kai: Sorry had NFI about your mother (had to do the same thing 5 years ago so can feel for you)

I'm the LAST person to stomp an idea just because it's not the norm or a little different as EVERY car I've ever built has gone against conventional thought!

I'm just trying to help out here as I did all of the feasability work on SCing a Mk3 already and without a few quite large compromises it's not going to happen and even then it's NOT going to be cheap.

I've already stated my preference for a SC over a Turbo but modern BB Turbo's have closed the gap nicely and have far more overhead these days!

IJ - no worries - i just assumed people knew, after my thread in the for sale section.

Appreciate the input and forewarnings about a project such as this, and i know it'd probably be easier to just do an N/A-T or dump in a 7M-GTE/1JZGTE etc, but thats not my style ;)

I've spent a long time around cars, since i was a kid, and i've done some pretty 'off the wall' fords in my time.

Just as an example these were my last 5 big projects:

1) Rover 216GTI (D16Z6 SOHC VTEC Engine transplant, sports clutch and big brake pack)
2) Ford Escort RS Turbo (1.9 litre CVH Engine transplant, Garrett T3 running 14psi boost)
3) Ford Fiesta RS Turbo (2.0 Litre ZVH Hybrid engine, Garrett T4 running 20psi boost, Weber Alpha Fuel Injection & management, Wilwood Calipers & Discs)
4) Ford Granada Cosworth (3.0 litre 'Top Boss' 24v Quad Cam transplant, diff, sump, driveshafts, prop and front suspension off a Cossie 4x4, MBE 941 ECU & Custom Plenum fabbed by a friend of mine from the XROC, MT75 rebuilt by quaife)
5) Triumph GT6 (4.2litre Rover V8 conversion, big brake pack)

I have plenty of experience in general car stuff and engine transplants as you can see, but all of those are kind of well known modifications, and certainly nothing out of the ordinary, with the possible exception of the Granada, which set me back a hefty wedge of cash.

If Supercharging the 7M really *does* turn out to cost more than 10k and give me not much else by comparison, then sure i'll go turbo, but until then...

kai: good plan, but it almost seems too simple to do. im thinking you're gonna run into a lot of problems (not because of incompetency, but because the supra's engine compartment was designed for the placement of the turbo)

Well Like I said before, I honestly think that its a waste of time and money, but I will say this. Its not that hard to do as long as he goes with a something along the lines of the whipple charger. It will only requier the alt. to be relocated and a custome intake mani to be made along with other minor details. The only thing that truely sucks about trying to use this type of charger is that is is really hard to intercool. Another thing that sucks is that the only feasible place to put the alt is where the A/C compressor is but being in England, he probably doesn't really need A/C where as I would never give it up while live in the HOT, HUMID Hell called Florida.

Well, it doesnt get as humid or hot as Florida, but i assure you, it *does* get toasty here in the summer!

The whipple charger was indeed the one i was considering. I've dealt with custom inlet manifolds before, on the Granada - but i wasnt the one that built it, just the one that provided the specs.

I could go for a total conversion, custom inlet manifold with three Jenvey DCNF throttle bodies and the whipple mounted to that, or i could try my other plan first and try mounting a whipples direct outlet to the existing throttle body as per my original idea. Of course, theres stuff that could be shifted about in the engine bay on the left hand side, there seems to be more room there...

yeah, I guess that you could put the charger on the right side next to the Exh. Manifold. The one that I saw somewhere (cant remember where) had the charger sitting where the intake plenum is. Basically a stock lower intake with a box plenum welded to is similar to the way that some build FFI's and the charger sat on top of the box.

The right side Idea is almost better cause it would allow you to keep the A/C and ALT as per stock, but having is on the hotter side of the motor, well I dont like that hole idea.

another downside to that, cj, is using a charger with the name "whipple".

"oh shit, look out; hes got a whipple on that thing!" just doesn't sound masculine, but maybe it's just me.

yeah, it does sound kinda panzi-ass when you say it in that context, but then again, think about this name "Disco Potato" and yet it is a pretty bad-ass little turbo for small displacment engines.

Lol @ Disco Potato :p

As for the name whipple....well i'll keep thinking of Charlie and the Chocolate factory (see if you get the reference). I relised that the whipple i had in mind is bigger than i need - so the smallest one would do. Also looking at the one from the Mazda Millennia S as well, same screw type, and i know someone thats supercharged their Cosworth Quad Cam V6 Cologne with my custom plenum design :)

Will do that tomorrow methinks. Although, i'm not bothered if its taller than the engine bay, like i said, can always cut out a section and make it raised, kinda like a power bulge :)
