Were the stock head bolts brand new, or did you reuse the old ones? It's not recommended to reuse the stock head bolts.

FWIW, I have a cheapie Evergreen headgasket I don't plan on using if you're interested. It should be ok for an n/a when torqued down to at least 72lbft. If you want to give it a go with the same HG let me know.

Tear into it again, clean the head and block, and install the Toyota HG.
Torque the factory headbolts to 75ft/lbs and drive it. Sucks, but you'll remember that cheap gaskets are cheap.

By whose recomendation? These are not TTY bolts. They can be re-used as long as they are not stretched beyond spec or corroded from BHG.

I thought stock toyota head bolts were TTY. They're not?

EDIT: I just looked it up on TSRM... they're not. They don't have the torque sequence of a TTY bolt. These are conventional bolts and can be reused. I was misinformed and have been passing along this info for a while. :: facepalm ::

Damn, that's a bad blow for an NA.

Hopefully you can clean it up, install a Toyota HG and reassemble.

Good luck man! :)

i can imagine setting the cruise at that fast around here... the cops are pretty much nazis around here... overfunded nazis at that, were lucky to not get pulled over going 70 in a 55..

i dont know what the deal is.. but i will find out tomorrow what happened..

your right i should have gotten more than 5 k out of it... as the oem gaskets made it 50-100k before blowing... i am still gonna blame it on the gasket... we will surely see though... hopefully i get some pics up tomorrow

Well I don't know how the cops in Utah are, but it was after midnight in the middle of nowhere on a 75mph highway. At one point we went just shy of an hour without seeing a SINGLE other car. Just wanted to make sure you knew it wasn't in traffic or anything. Wildlife was my big concern.

^ you doubt wrong. a cheap hg can blow at anytime. you need the proper torque and a proper hg for the engine to last. buying a 50$ hg and expecting it to last is just wrong even for a stock style hg.

it was definitely a torque issue... it seemed like the bolts around that cylinder were loose when i went to remove them...

but i wouldnt be supprised if it was also made worse by a lean condition.. as the o2 sensor is known bad and i was running the car without it for a long time...

the car ran great without it... but lately i was tired of running through my gas so i plugged it back in.. and it was noticeably slower in closed loop but much better gas mileage...

ignition timing is advanced a little bit also, but i always run premium..

my cheap felpro hg lasted me almost 2 years of hard driving until i leaned out from a boost spike and crushed a coolent jacket ring (i'm positive it would have lasted longer if this didn't happen).

not to say those hg are good. i have a couple eristic hg sitting around and they are extremely crappy quality.

but i say a ishno, felpro, or oem hg will be just fine. just depends how much you want to spend. that order is from least expensive to most.
