it was definitely a torque issue... it seemed like the bolts around that cylinder were loose when i went to remove them...

but i wouldnt be supprised if it was also made worse by a lean condition.. as the o2 sensor is known bad and i was running the car without it for a long time...

the car ran great without it... but lately i was tired of running through my gas so i plugged it back in.. and it was noticeably slower in closed loop but much better gas mileage...

ignition timing is advanced a little bit also, but i always run premium..

Advanced timing without a functioning O2 sensor?!?!

I think we found another few items "working against you that we dont know about" just like I stated above.

Doesn't matter if you have race gas, you shouldn't run a car without an o2 sensor, let alone advance the timing on it. :nono:

when the o2 isnt connected it runs off a base map... and it's not like im running 15 degrees BTC try slightly over base timing..

the highoctane fuel will be fine.. imo

drove quite a while.. 2k miles or so...

but i still feel the o2 leaned it out too much!

my cheap felpro hg lasted me almost 2 years of hard driving until i leaned out from a boost spike and crushed a coolent jacket ring (i'm positive it would have lasted longer if this didn't happen).

My last felpro torqued to 72lb/ft lasted a good 4 years when my car last ran. Plenty of trips to the dragstrip, and spirited driving. I missed a gear on the dragstrip running 18psi on a 57trim CT26 (i know i know), overreved, shattered my piston ring lands, and the felpro still held up. I'll see if I can post a pic of it soon.

if its running retarded in limp mode then wouldnt that cancel out my timing advance??

all i know is that originally, the car ran great in open loop, but as soon as it heated up to temp it bogged down mid rpm.. so knowing that the o2 reading is only used in closed loop i disconnected it to see if it would change my symptoms.. and it did, cleared it up completely..

i assumed the o2 was bad b/c it was run on my old engine which was burning a quart of oil every 500 miles...

i know you've been around some time aj... but isnt a limp mode also a base map without adjustment?

furthermore suprarx7nut, i dont care for you very much..

your posts are not helpful in anyway, and fairly condecending.

i know verywell that the o2 sensor controls fuel trim and as a result, effects emissions and timing.

it was my understanding that every ecm has a base map of what/how it will run when any one sensor is missing(b/c sensors do fail).. so thats why i ran it the way i did. and it ran very well, granted the gasket blew.. but as i stated the torque was wrong and the gasket shitty!

Issues in what you did:
- No O2 sensor for trim
- Advanced timing
- Beat on it in this state

You're LUCKY it was only the HG that failed.

My posts may not be very helpful for you right now because I'm stating what you've done incorrectly and it's too late to fix. BUT my post could be helpful to others when they read about your current misfortune. In this thread alone you've learned a few things. Though we haven't been out of our way nice to you about it, you are being educated.

-Use a Toyota HG or a good aftermarket one
-Dont drive your car with a bad O2 sensor, let alone push it hard
-Don't mess with your timing when the car isn't running up to spec
-Torque the head bolts to at least 70 ft-lbs (more if using ARP hardware)

When you go to fix this motor you will have a better understanding of what possible failures could be and you'll be better off because of this thread. :)

I hope I don't sound too condescending. I know I don't know shit compared to plenty of the members here. I'm still very much a learner myself. ;)

Didn't really read the thread, but on my 92 I put cheap ebay gaskets on it (didn't think I was going to keep, was planning to swap a 2j in, lol). I used pretty much everything minus the headgasket. Running good now with like 25k miles. At about 20k miles I had a bad oil leak from the valve cover gaskets as they were rock hard, replaced with some toyota ones, and still kicking. The car is bone stock, if that makes a difference.

I bought that same Evergreen gasket set off of eBay, but also ordered a 1.2mm HKS MLS gasket to use. New ARP studs were installed, and it's never a bad idea to check the torque after a few thousand miles. The other gaskets and seals seem to be working just fine. I'll be checking the rear main when I do the new clutch next week.
