Spec 3+ disc impressions

I need to replace my spec stage 3 6 puck disc with the 3+ disc (bought it used, not enough material left to warrant putting it back in) and I was wondering if anyone has used it. I like the full face aspect of it and it seems like it should hold quite a bit of power while being streetable (using the spec stage 3 pressure plate)

any help is appreciated

I have had four of these clutches in my car, 3 stg 3's and one stg 3+. That should tell you something right there. They break the pressure plates and wobble, and will destroy your crankshaft. Dont put that piece of shit in your car man.:3d_frown::thumbsdow

specs clutches would be a lot better if it was a true highclamped PP.
its just a stock PP thats painted blue.
Upgrade the PP to an ACT PP and your set.

I've been in email contact with SPEC and they instructed me to send my PP back to them when I order my 3+ disc (which is actually $80 cheaper - $219 if I have their setup to begin with) because it requires "updading" ($35) for the thicker 3+ disc which apparently includes a slight clamp load increase.

the engagement was quick at first but now that I'm used to it I love it, lets say there is 5" of movement from fully released clutch pedal, to pedal to the floor, you push down the first 3.5" and nothing happens, then in the last 1.5" its fully disengaged. My previous clutch was a spec stage 4, that thing was horrible, the chatter was unbearable. Now with the 3+ its hardly noticeable, I have a jawsgear aluminum driveshaft also, which I didnt have when I had the stage 4, but between the clutch and driveshaft replacement, the car has changed dramatically. I definitely recommend this clutch, as did HPF when I was looking to buy one.

Let me know if there is any more info you were looking to get,

Jon

just out of curiosity, would you be able to take a stab at the pedal pressure difference between the 3+ and stock? I suppose this is a moot point for me though as the clutch setup previously in my car (using STOCK pp and disc) was rediculously heavy due to old fluid and a near-death slave cylinder.

Also, fwiw, the engagement point can be adjusted on the clutch...I prefer mine closer to the top of the pedal travel, but to each his own.

thanks for the reply.

I beleive all of the pressure plates SPEC sells are re-worked stock units. It is probably a hell of alot cheaper for SPEC to start with an already mass-produced pressure plate and modify it accordingly, versus going through the trouble of manufacturing one themselves. Here is a direct quote from spec:
The thing is, if it was purchased before Xmas, you would need to send the pressure plate in to us for an adjustment, because the st3+ disc is thicker. If it was purchased after Xmas, all the discs are the thicker version and you would not have to do that. The st3+ discs are $299 retail , but cost you only 219 since you have our kit. And if the plate has to be updated (also gets a little more clamp load), that would be $35.

Pictures speak louder than words. This is the fourth one to do this to me. I installed the first two and had more luck out of those installations. The last two were done by a local shop with the same problem soon after. On the fifth install my crank pulley bolt broke and the car is down. These pictures here are of the plate that was upgraded from 3 to 3+. It was wobbling I told them I want a new pressure plate, not that one, and the shop took it to spec to get it "redone". They tell me to drive the car after the 3+ install and these pictures are the result.

You see those air tool sanding marks? Spec did that, the factory is 40 min from my house. The guys who did the install: their dad works at spec, he builds the clutches....

I'll tell you again, its not worth it.

I have a 3+ imo theres no difference in pedal feel from stock.. was hoping it was stiffer.. I talked to spec at sema, they said the 3+ uses the stg5 pp.. seems pretty good driving around.. hopfulyl itll hold up to drag racing.. going to be putting it through its paces this weekend....

my old spec stg 3 worked good.. Was low hp (stock turbo 7m 300whp 350 ftlbs).. lasted 2-3 years.. probably at least 50 passes at the track and Many passes on the street.. its still going in my buddys old car that he sold..

Spec stages 1-3 are most likely remanufactured stock pressure plates (but Spec, of course, won't confirm). Stages 3+ 4, and 5 are higher clamping force pressure plates which should give a slightly stiffer clutch pedal feel...

If you've destroyed 4 clutches the exact same way, there has got to be some other factors at work here, perhaps crankwalk or some other mechanical damage....Those pictures aren't normal...
