So I have a ticking...

Hmm don't think I've ever heard anything like that, but I do have a big "hiss" noise when the engine is revving above 2k RPM (and even louder when its under boost).
Sounds more like it is coming through the air intake pod, though, so it might be normal. :)

*sigh*

Well, I just finished putting the cam covers back on after checking the valve shim clearances. Took the car for a quick spin to check all was A-OK, and encountered a few problems...

First, car seemed to be hesitating under boost. I'd just reattached the stock IC piping and made sure it was nice and tight, so I don't think there's a boost leak.

Second, Code 52. Knock Sensors. :(

Anyway, back out to the garage.

Your first problem is caused by your second problem. If your harness is plugged into you knock sensors, do the SOGI rewire. The hesitation under boost is because your ECU is pulling timing due to the code 52.

The rewire doesn't cost that much & isn't that hard to do. Time consuming though. Sheaff sells a kick ass rewire kit for a reasonable price, so that's an option too.

Thanks for the advice, I might search around and see what Shaeff's kit consists of.

I just pulled the EFI fuse and the code 52 hasn't reappeared with the engine running in the garage, but I haven't taken it for a drive yet (getting too late :(). I'll see how it is in the morning and then rewire the knock sensors during the week.

Pardon the ignorance, but is it going to cause damage running the engine whilst under code 52?
I understand it's retarding the timing, but that's not going to cause problems and it'll just run poorly, correct?

It won't damage anything, but your fuel economy will suck. The ECU pulls timing in effort to enrich the mixture, therefore reducing the percieved detonation. You will only run rich, no damage.

I took it for a drive this morning, everything seemed fine. The code 52 hasn't come back yet, so I'm assuming its just a loose connection somewhere.

Drove it to work this morning and it felt "wierd". I think its since I adjusted the throttle cable last night when I reattached it and now the accelerator pedal is very stiff for the first 10% of movement and it kind of feels like its either "on" or "off" and not a linear movement. I'll have to tackle that when I get home. :)

Anyway, back on topic. Below is my measurements of the valve shim clearance on my car. The only two which are outside the specifications (one's 0.04mm too big, one's 0.01mm too small) are the very first set of valves.

Basically what I'm asking is if any of the following looks like it could be causing troubles, or causing ticking noises?

Thanks. :)

Exhaust-side specification:
0.20 - 0.30 mm
Intake-side specification:
0.15 - 0.25mm

Exh. Cyl. Int.
0.30 6 0.20
0.25 6 0.18
0.25 5 0.24
0.24 5 0.22
0.30 4 0.16
0.24 4 0.16
0.20 3 0.19
0.24 3 0.20
0.27 2 0.17
0.28 2 0.19
0.30 1 0.17
0.34 1 0.14

Say I was to replace all the shims, would I be aiming for the lower end of the spec range? eg, aiming for 0.15mm on the intake and 0.20 on the exhaust?

OK, so:

  • Ticking in the top end => worn valve shims?
  • Having problems starting when cold => running too rich? cold start injector?
  • Bit of a studder/shudder after around 5 min of light driving => same as above?

I went to pull the valve covers off today and check the shims but I couldn't get any new gaskets on a saturday, and I wanted to replace them at the same time. :(

cold start may be your coolant temp sensor, i had the exact same problem, replaced my cold start injector didnt do anything, changed out my coolant temp sensor and it starts first crank now.......i also have the same exact ticking noise you speak of and am trying to figure it out too......

Thanks for the info, I might as well try replacing it and see how it goes. :)

Did someone already say injector pulse? I don't know much about what exactly injector pulse is (injectors opening and closing?), but I have heard that it makes a ticking noise.

Yeah I can hear my injectors ticking, but they're in a noticibly different spot than the other tick, which is more central on the motor.

I wish I could just fly Ian over to Adelaide and get him to help me. :runaway:

Can't help feeling that my first mechanical challenge, which at first seemed to have gone quite well, keeps getting worse and worse. It just feels *terrible*. :(
