So I have a ticking...

The EGR cooler was removed and replaced with a block off plate... perhaps my block off plate wasn't as flat as I thought it was! It's pretty sealed up with high temp silicone too, so I didn't think there was a chance of it leaking..

You sure you're talking about the cooler? It's the 6"x2" plate on the back of the head. Sounds like you're thinking about the block off plate on the intake manifold. ;)

No I'm talking about the cooler.

I blocked off the port on the back of the head with a plate, blocked off the outlet on the side of the head and the port on the intake manifold....

Wouldn't want to leave the EGR cooler on there while the rest of the EGR system was gone!

OK, so:

  • Ticking in the top end => worn valve shims?
  • Having problems starting when cold => running too rich? cold start injector?
  • Bit of a studder/shudder after around 5 min of light driving => same as above?

I went to pull the valve covers off today and check the shims but I couldn't get any new gaskets on a saturday, and I wanted to replace them at the same time. :(

Hmm and with the above problems about starting + stuttering, after the car has started it smells REALLY strongly of petrol in the air...

I'm still having problems with my damn power steering. I just spent all day removing the PS resevoir, flushing it out to clean the filter, replacing all the PS hoses, getting ATF everywhere and putting it all back together but I still have a loud whining/screeching noise when I turn the wheel. Maybe the PS belt is a bit loose, but it seems pretty tight -- as soon as the PS fluid warms up a little, the screeching goes away. For some reason when the PS fluid is cold, the pump seems to be under a huge amount of load..

*sigh*

I dont think that the ticking has anything to do with your performance problems. I do think its a shim adjustment problem or an exhaust gasket leak. Im sure you can differentiate between the two.

Other than actually feeling/hearing an exhaust gasket leaking, is there any more 'technical' way to test for an exhaust leak in the engine bay?

Anyway... I've pulled the cam covers off tonight, I will check the valve shim clearances tomorrow and see what they're like (Should any of the valve lifters be "loose"? They all seem to be quite tight as they currently sit).

By the way, I was planning on replacing the cam cover seals whilst i'm doing this (they're only 10,000KM old seals), just wondering whether it's a problem to re-use the old seals?
(I have four brand new seals here anyway, I'm mostly just curious)

Thanks :)
