Slow Spool & Chugging

Alright posting this for a friend since he hasnt done it yet. Current Mods are:

3" Downpipe
60-1 Turbo
Stock BOV
Stock Boost
Apexi Power Intake
5spd

Basically the turbo takes forever to spool, and before it spools you can feel the car chugging until it hits full boost (approx 4.5k). The car also feels like it has absolutely NO balls on the low end, even once it hits boost it doesnt feel like it should. We replaced all intake side gaskets and checked all the IC hoses. Timing is set to 10 degrees, new NGK Platinum plugs & NGK wires. Checked the gaskets for the turbo and their all there and in good shape. TPS has not been fully set but has been "set" to the general proper setting. No codes, and the o2 sensor is in working condition, came out of a working supra.

However the car sputters ALOT when you let off the gas and just let it fall down through the RPM range. Vehicle could be running rich but we dont know for sure.

Anyone got any ideas?

Forgot to add that the previous owner installed a Type R BOV on stock boost not knowing it was too much "BOV" for the car. Turbo basically compressor surged its self to death. Even with the Type R it still had the same problems. Owner did note that the car seemed a bit "slow".

I gave him my 60-1 to use temporarily and the problem still persists even AFTER going to stock BOV. I know the 60-1 works because it was in my car running 17lbs prior to pulling it out.

I mean this thing is running 8lbs (creep w/ 3" Cooleeze DP) and it feels slower then a stock supra w/ full stock exhaust

how could it possibly be a boost leak if we have checked and replaced all hoses and gaskets?

We checked ALL of the IC hoses, we replaced the entire intake side gaskets, and just checked the exhaust side as well. I mean we can go through the IC hoses again but anyone else have any other ideas as to what could cause this? What if it was some sort of electronic sensor issue?

A friend of mine got the same problem in his auto turbo and he changed the Fuel filter & cleaned his injectors and the problem was gone donno if that's the same case or not.

we never had the injectors flow tested that could very well be one of the things thats wrong..anyone else?

does he have a wide band or pyro to check if its getting right fuel? like others said it could be a fuel issue since it doesnt seem to be air.

Accordian pipe was replaced as well, thats pre turbo it wouldnt cause issues. We are leaning more towards fuel related issues, going to swap the injectors out with the ones on my old motor and see how that goes. Also check the IC hoses one more time.

And no SMP142 he doesnt have any of that stuff, its pretty much stock aside from what ive listed, he does have a boost gauge and his vac @ warm idle is around 10psi.

edit:
he just recently put the stock catback on with the 3" downpipe and now the turbo is glowing red after a somewhat long drive. Im really thinking Fuel issues.. but could a boost leak cause this as well

^yes but we are at a loss for what could be causing such low vacuum. Anyone else got any ideas?

maybe timing...my friend had no boost leak and had a -5psi vac.....his timing was off...car ran waaay better after it was fixed

timing is set to 10 per TSRM so unless its retarding timing for some reason..

10psi is a little low for vac.....usual is 20-25 in that area

I agree...it is low...leads me to think leak as well. Check the intake manifold vac connections, ISC gasket, cold start gasket, and brake boost line.

A glowing turbo after a mild run is bad...timing can cause that, but so can a excessive rich condition. In either case, his EGT is probably pretty high...I would not run it until this is resolved. He doesn't want to melt a piston top!

I am the Owner of thhis PIECE we are talking about, it seems like my EGT's are throught the roof at my ENTIRE exhaust side of my turbo glows red after driving for 20 min on the freeway, driving nice too. So my plan of action would be to replace the fuel filter and swap Injectors. after that ill take the damn thing to toyota for a computer diagnostic.

BTW: i get 16MPG city, freeway combined.

start by checking the codes. if you have a turbo pressure code, then it's a boost/vacuum leak.

jdub all of those gaskets were replaced, the ONLY thing that i could think aside from fuel related issuse would be his IC and IC piping.. other then that.. nothing

shaeff as stated no codes present.

Ok...couple of more things just to be on the safe side ;)

- Throttle body, ISC, and cold start all bolted down tight
- Crack in the fender pipe (assuming stock)
- Known good intercooler...no leaks
- Known good ISC...it's not sticking open

This sounds like a re-build. Is the CPS installed correctly? Is a stock crank pulley installed?

from what i could tell it was not, it came off a 92 supra and it was working prior to putting it on.
