You know Mike I was thinking, maybe my engine is a little tough to turn over because now it's turning both cams against spring loaded valves. That and it a fresh built shortblock I guess. I really hoping it's my starter. Have Darrell call me so I can set up a time to visit him so I can nab that starter. Thanks.

David, how much would a starter run me on my '91 Supra? You can PM me if you like. I think my starter is too weak to turn over my engine.

how about the clearance on the valves ? are they in spec? bent cams? i wonder if you take your timing belt off, if it will free it up? Lets hope it the starter or something other then the block. Darrell just put it in his car, He will give you a call around 3 tomorrow.

Ok, cool. Yeah, I hope it's not the block. When I had it on the stand It wasn't that hard to turn. I don't think the cams were bent. They went on without issue. All the valve clearances are within spec. I dunno. We'll see soon. My starter did seem a bit weak. I've seen other starters torque like crazy when tested. I'm just saying.

Ok, went to Darrell's to pick up the starter tonight. Got back home and put it on. Turned the key and get the same results. You can hear the solenoid pop out, but not turn. That engine is too damn tight. I even tried turning the crank bolt while my wife started the car to see if it would turn. Nope. Tight.

Maybe the cams are binding. I lubed the crap out of them when I installed them though. But it has been since May 21st that I put the head on the shortblock. I was looking up old post and saw it was while ago. The shortblock was rebuilt probably three years ago now.

Should I take off the cams and lube them up again? Take off the timing belt and try to crank it like that? Should I try to crank the engine with my impact gun and risk shearing off the crank bolt?
I think the easiest thing to do is take off the timing belt then crank it. Then I'll be back at square one when I put it back on. Maybe I should do both relube the cams, and crank it with the timing belt off. I dunno.

I think I'll work on it a little at a time in the mornings before I have to go to work. Hopefully by this weekend I'll get to the bottom of why it's so hard to turn. We shall soon see.

Bottem end. :icon_frow It's the culprit. The cams turn easily. I just took off the top timing cover, loosen the tensioner, pulled off the timing belt from the cam sprockets. Turned the bottom end and it was still hard to turn. Its still turns though. I tried to start the car to see if the start will turn it... no. I'm really leaning into putting the impact wrench on it and spinning the motor to see if it'll lube up and get easier. Or is there something I can spray down the spark plug holes to lube up the rings? I'll take this topic over to the technical section for some more advice. Thanks for any ideas you guys can come up with.

EDIT: I'll pour a little oil in the spark plug hole to see if the drag is coming from the piston rings. Then I'll manually turn it and see if it loosens up. I'll report back.

Put oil in the holes to try to lube the rings. No luck on that. The start will not crank over the engine. I put my torque wrench on the crank bolt to see how much torque it would take to turn it. 44lb/ft of torque is what it took. Apparently it's too much for a starter to turn. I'm gonna ask in the tech section.

You guys aren't going to believe this. All that shit I went through and it turns out that I didn't have the starter's positive cable hooked up to the battery. Don't fucking judge me!! I haven't hooked up a battery to this car in over ten years! I was checking the cable to see how difficult it would be changing it out, and found the other side of the cable hidden under the intake manifold.

But I have a new issue. It cranks just fine now, but I have no oil pressure. I even unhooked the turbo feed line and put it in a cup to see if anything was coming out. Nothing. Yes, I do have 5 quarts of oil in it!! How long do I have to crank it to get oil pressure? I did it for 30seconds two different times. I figure the oil has to fill up the filter, it's coolers, and then the engine but I didn't want to burn out a starter. I'll do some more research on that topic.
