Gixx: I'm just wondering if your balancer has moved on the hub.

This would make the stock timing mark incorrect.

Pull #1 plug bring the piston up on the compression grab a piece of fuel hose a foot long and drop it in the plug hole then turn the motor till it's as high as it can get then look where the mark is to confirm that it's at 0.

Failing this it's time to pull the covers and redial it from scratch as it sounds like it's a tooth out.

I agree with Malloy I had a shitload taken off my last motor head and block but still had no problems like yours.

I don't know, I'll try that my next day off... I did do a compression and leakdown test, and everything is fine. It has to be cam timing, because it CAN'T be anything else....

I'm going to go ahead and try to get my new AE86 running..... That way I can give the supra some vacation time for a little while and quit putting so many miles on my expensive engine...

you guys have got the boost & hp switched...lol... It was 14 psi of boost tapering off to about 10.... The boost is the lower graph, the hp is the higher one.

well, I just got off the phone with MDC.... I'm going to try the hose trick that IJ suggested saturday or so, and I'm going to pull the covers off and see what is up with this thing. I'm also going to put a new timing belt on for the hell of it. I hope this solves it, because I really really don't have 350+ dollars to spend on cam gears right now....

Gixx, has anyone ever verified that you can't run 2j cam gears?
'Cause you can get a set of fidanza cam gears for 200. or a single cam gear for $41..
It would seem that finding a spacer to retro fit them would be well worth the $100 price difference.

Logic would suggest that the 10o'clock pin is retarded and the 2 o'clock pin is advanced, but I'm not for sure on that.
Logic would be correct Jake!

Just went out and had a look at my AEM pullies and you're right!

Not sure how much of an offset Toyota put in as it's really only meant to allow for belt stretch/wear.

can anyone verify 2jz cam gears working, I can get a set from my tuner on the real cheap.

IJ, my balancer lines up at 5 degrees for TDC.... so, to fix, I would have to set everything with the balancer at 5 degrees and run 15 degrees of ign timing?

Turn the motor to true TDC and remark the balancer.

Use the corner edge of a file to file a new notch and dribble some white paint in it.

Now reset the Cams to true 0/0 and adjust the CPS as everything will be out 5 degrees.

It can only be trusted if you check it for true TDC Joel, this is the point I'm trying to make.

Little Johnny/Fuji whoever is in charge of balancers at Toyota is hung over from a hard night of Saki and Geisha's comes to work isn't on top of his game in the bonding division that morning lets a pileObalancers go through offset 2>3 degrees from true, ditto the guy that runs the machine that's set to cut the Crank keyways.....

A degree here a degree there and you have NFI why your motor is a dog as it's "Timed right".

Add into this Old Balancers can slip and it gets worse.

Personally I'd ditch it get either a reco one or a new one as if it's slipped they can spit the outter off of the hub with tragic results :(.

Again I'm trying very hard NOT to be a cock here but never "assume" it's right until you check it with your own hands/eyes.
