he goes up to me and says " just so we dont get off on the wrong foot wrong, "nice car."

after taking pictures of everything with his camera phone and writing dont a bunch of shit he ask me if i had a bar on my door. i said no i dont. he ask if i did the swap and i said no. he then ask if i knew that it was a 2j and not a 7m gte.
i my head i was like, "oooh shit! this guy knows his supras! im fucked!" i said yes.

after sitting in my car for half an hour he give me the ticket to sign and tells me i need to go to the state ref. DAMN!

question is, for those of you who have been to a california state ref. what should i do? whay advice do you have for me and give me all options i have.

i have a JDM aristo 2jz gte in a 92 mk3

Wow I am glad the cops aren't that smart here in GA. This may be a dumb question but I am not familiar with CA laws. What exactly is the state ref. and what will happened once you get there and they see the swap? Good luck

well, if you swap a motor you have register that motor to that car. you take it to the state referee to make sure that it passes the stupid california smog laws and safety.

So in Cali you cant swap motors, even if it is from a newer vehicle ( i realize it is a JDM tyte motor) but even with the US emissions stuff on it its still illegal? If so that is really really ghey...So glad I live where nobody cares what you do to your car.

^ "sorry officer i just got this car like a week ago and am still learning where everything is"... and just hide the hood latch release. hahahaha

where was the 'probable cause' in that? "pop your hood"... "uh ok!!!"... LOL

last time i checked they cant just pop your hood for no reason unless you were at or were street racing... but in all honesty, if the cop just LOOKED at magazines and paid attention... he know would a 2jz when he sees it... its all over the place! so im not that suprised that he knew it was a 2jz. you should have asked him what engine was suppose to be in there. lol

and this is why i never bothered to swap engines... but why did you get pulled over in the first place?!?!?!
and i talked to my dad about the whole 'ref' thing... and if the refs arent open, cant they just send you to a 'test-only' place to get checked out? i would think that would clear it at least some what equally to a ref.

Hence why I will never live in california...

If the emissions equipment is there (is it?), and you play stupid enough (I bought it this way), you might be able to fight it as it's simply a newer engine.

No emissions equipment and you're fucked...

I think the first mistake was opening the hood. Second thing was admitting that you knew what was in there versus what should be.

Ignorance of the law isn't a defense, but you can argue you bought it like that and you didn't know any better. Something like that.

They won't let you off scot free but if you plea with them and agree to take it out and do what you need to to rectify the problem, ask if they can avoid the fine(s) or have at least a reduced fine.

After that, you can put in a 7mgte and run that (not a bad thing at all) or ge and attempt to run the 2j secretly later.

That's what I think.

Ok, if you don't pop your hood the cops can tow your car.
Californias state refs have been laid off because there is no state budget and they wont be around until the budget gets fixed. In the mean while try to get all the vacuum diagram from the american 2jz equipped cars. You will need to have carb leagal parts. Also you need to get the charcoal canister of a 2j and evap system diagram and all the smog stuff.
Good Luck!
