I come from a land down under
I had a locally made short throw shifter that I removed the rubber isolator on way back when I first got the Supra and it used to get a harmonic vibration at certain rpm's so had to go.

haha, usa
I considered doing this cut mod but I didn't because the higher shifter (stock) lets me sit back in my seat and shift. If I had the shorter shifter I would have to sit forward more to shift, and I wouldn't like that since I'm tall.

from a mathmatical standpoint....if you cut the shifter down then you don't have to move your hand as far to get it in and out of gear, although you won't have the leverage as you did before and it will (might) take more force to get it in and out of gear. I have the sogi mod and I love it. Looks great, feels great, and I don't miss shifts. I myself wouldn't spend $300+ on a short throw.

The sogi shifter mod is one of my all time favorite cheap mods. I changed to redline oil and replaced the green bushing when I did the sogi mod, and hard shifting has never been any more of an issue than it was with the stock shifter in the tens of thousands of miles since I did the mod.

In regards to hard shifting, I know that with mileage, age and general condition, every situation is different, but be sure to change your tranny fluid if/when you do the mod--the difference is night and day. On one of my drain/refills after the mod I used a Lucas Oil product (couldn't acquire Redline for some reason) and hard/missed shifts became much more common. I switched back to Redline soon afterwards and since then gear changes have been buttery smooth.

One thing I wish I'd done when I did the mod is to cut threads onto the resulting shaft...I really dislike shift knobs that use the three setscrews. More vibrations will be transmitted into the passenger compartment with the stock shift lever dampener gone, and the extra vibrations seem to loosen my setscrews very quickly. There are few things more infuriating than having to re-tighten your shift knob at a redlight--or worse, having it come off in your hand during spirited driving...be sure to use lock-tite!

Could you post some pics? I'm very interested on how it sits and the height.

Can anybody else show some pics of thier SOGI Shifters.
I'm in the market aswell. It would be greatly appreciated.

Well, The Jim King V2 Short Shifter doesn't do a lot for the height. I think it could be an inch shorter than stock. The big difference is the shorter throws. It "feels" like you are more connected to the car. It takes a little more effort to move the shifter. It's the perfect balance of shorter throws and the effort it takes to move the shifter. If you made the JK shifter shorter (which you can if I remember correctly) it would be harder to move but look better. Such is the case with Agatha my black 84 Supra. All this being said here are the pictures requested.

i got my own little spin on the sogi short shifter mod. i welded the stock threads back on so, i can screw on the shift knobs. it bugs me if the shift knob moves around when i'm driving.

heh, ya know when you pull the two sticks apart, and there's the thinner part at the top of the lower stick? well, i cut that off level with the thicker lower part, then ground that down a bit with an angle grinder, THEN re-threaded that part, so it's even lower than the sogi mod. i havent missed a shift yet. :)

i like the sogi mod.... i have a heavy arm so i like shifting hard. im just tired of replacing the green truck bushing all the time. have anyone tried the abflug bushing kit from horsepowerfreak.com? its cost a lot but it looks like it will do some justice with shifting.

I'm tired of replacing the green bushing too; it seems like it wears out so fast with the SOGI mod--or maybe it just wasn't as noticeable with the stock height shifter. Anyways, since my green bushing is all sloppy and worn again, I decided to go with the urethane shifter bushings from www.marlincrawler.com - total was under $25 shipped, and it should be here in time to install over the weekend. I'll be sure to post a review to let everyone know how it goes.

Also just ordered a GReddy counterweight knob (threaded M10 P1.50 for the smaller inner shaft--I'll thread the shaft and see how well it stays on there) to eliminate the dreaded setscrew compromise. Hopefully the additional weight of this knob will help alleviate some of the notchiness too.

Personally, I'd like to know if it's possible to do a slightly more sophisticated SOGI type mod.

Can you seperate the two shafts, cut 1"-1.5" off both halves, then re-cement the two?

The only other part I'm still trying to figure out is if you cut off the lower stem (the one with the shifter bushing attached) and welded it back on with a 1/2" SS extension would it be likely to break? There's no way I'm gonna do it if I'm going to find myself dismantling my tranny on the hunt for shredded gears and a steel shaft.

Jeff i was actually talking to a friend of mine a few weeks ago about how much better it would be to make a console that would eliminate that dip. It would feel like more of a cockpit and look better for the shifter. I wonder if there is a way to mold in another console or make something custom... hmmmmm.
