last time I read about cheap cars to upgrade, the MKIII was looked over for being "too heavy" "has headgasket and rod bearing issues" and "wasn't as good as the later model ones"

it's not just an issue of the MKIV guys, but most of the tuning world it seems...

But its true. It is sort of an underdog, but strictly performance, there are several other cars that would be a much better option to beef up. The mkiii is a cult car, you like or you dont. Its not a fad car where everyone does one up cause they're the most pupular around and cheap. You still will get respect in the tuner world, but 75%+ of the mkiiis out there just arn't that respectable with either bad paint/interior, problems, or duchebag kids that own then cause its a 'supra' giving them bad names.. Just like hondas.. every ricer has a honda so nearly everyone thinks they're rice cars.. when MANY of them are fairly beefy (talking more like 5 years ago.. now people know the potential of them).. The mkiii will always be shadowed by the mkiv.. no way around it. If you want attention, this isn't the car for you.

I agree with poodles and tissimo...guys, remember when Super Street did that article on the late Mike Urbano's 91? this is what they stated:

Much like an NFL game between two suck-ass teams (say, the Chargers and the Bears; Hey, the Chargers aren’t that bad!—JK), third-gen Supras have never been able to hold much of my interest. These Toyotas, in general, are rather heavy, slow unless turbocharged, and constantly cowering in the shadows of the superior fourth-gen Supras.
The Supra Turbo debuted in the states back in ’87. Equipped with a 3.0L DOHC inline-six and a single turbocharger, it produced 230 hp. Decent, certainly, until you consider that any knob in an Integra GS-R can get the same power with a 50-shot of nitrous and do it in a car that weighs about 800 pounds less. And like Star Trek’s Scotty, we simply need more power here.

If you didn't give a fuck you wouldn't build a supra. You'd move on to modifying a muscle car or some v8. Supras are way more complicated when it comes to rebuilding, modifying, the use of the electronics/tuning. Chosing turbos, all this shit required more research, time and money to get the same power as a lot of domestics or other larger displacement cars.

Parts are more rare and more of a pain in the ass to get and we are short on knowledgable people to help. If you wanted big power out of a mustang you can go to a local place that could probably get you whatever you needed.

So I think you do give a fuck yes

This it OT, but why not? hes building for him self.. He doesn't care what other people think, how would that mean he shouldn't be building a supra? your logic is flawed..

I’m never going to understand this. Seemingly after every major supra meet, guys come on here and start bitching about how the MKIV supra out shining us.

Why does it matter so much to you?

Seriously, fuck the MKIV crowd.
Fuck the “Tuning world”.
Fuck all the magazines that put the MK3 down,

And what’s more, fuck the opinions of everybody, including the members on this forum – It’s your car, your money, your style. Build it the way you want it.

The problem with this analogy is the fact that even the "Almighty" suffers from the same problem today. How many "newer" cars have horsepower numbers close to the MkIV now? If you add "a 50-shot of nitrous" to those cars you can match/top the horsepower level of the TT MkIV too.

This is like comparing the highest horsepower car of the 30s to today's Honda Civic.

DUH!?! We call it progress!

MkIIIs get no respect because we haven't shown people that we deserve respect. PERIOD!

Way back in 1997 nobody knew what the MkIV was capable of. The highest horsepower Supra at SILV97 was Ken Henderson and he had just over 400whp w/out nitrous. SILV98 saw that number jump to 525 and then at SILV99 Chris Rado sprayed the nitrous and threw down 676 at the wheels.

The MkIV has a HUGE following and that brings a lot more resources so their numbers have gone up much more quickly.

We have a few people out there pushing the envelope (if all you care about is HP). Take a look at Duane, Tony, and Nate (I hope that was right). These guys have all set the bar WAY up there and each has a dyno sheet showing 800whp+

If all you care about is seeing a similar car on TV, in a movie, or in a magazine then I am afraid you are driving this car for the wrong reason. Go out and get yourself a honda civic and you'll see those things plastered everywhere.

It's funny everybody keeps saying that the MKIIISupra is so heavy, and I agree it is. But Nissan just released the weight specs on the standard trim GT-R. and it comes in at 3500LBS. The high performance cars of today are quickly moving into our weight arena. It seems what was once to heavy is now acceptable.

Manufacturers don't think it's acceptable, it's just reality. Ever increasing safety standards and expectations of luxury and comfort are forcing cars to become heavier and heavier. Take a look at the standard equipment of a sports car like the 350z, which sacrifices a lot and is impractical to the average commuter, and times have definitely changed since the days of the 240/260/280z and Celica/Supras.

You say that, but Mitsubishi does the EVO IX at 2,888lbs And chevy does the corvette at 3,132lbs. So cars can be lighter, but manufactures are confident that they can over come weight by adding more power. Hence the reason we have been seeing a renewed HP race with manufactures. They are using the same formula we have been using for a while now.
