Update 10-30-07, 8:11pm: OK, not fixed at all. I was really skeptical and unsure what was going on. Well, i drove to Napa to get a new gasket for my thermostat and then i went to trader joes for some dinner. Well, got out and no start again. I was furious! I spent 2.5 hours in the parking lot troubleshooting it.
I first tried my idea of disconnecting the battery for a second, then i tried 5 minutes and then i sat there for about an hour with it disconnected. NO luck at all.
I hiked up the car with the tire jack and grabbed the ignition wire from the starter. What was super weird was it was reading only .3v. I dont know how that is possible. Earlier it was reading 1.5v.
So then i called my buddy mike and told him what was going on, we agreed that i should try to hot wire it. Well, being that i wanted to fix it for more then just the ride home, i found some wire that could reach to the battery. I added it to the female spade connector that connects to the starter. When i had it connected well, i tried it. NOTHING! I did hear the slight whirling noise that i heard before. Meaning it was definitely not the injectors.
I then got back under the car and pulled the plug off the starter once again and i noticed it might not have been totally seated. I then grabbed my tire iron and started hitting the hell out of the starter. I really didn't want to go home in a tow truck. Well, whatever i did, it worked. Either the connector was not seated or the hitting worked. I have no idea which did it.
So i am now really confused. I think there is still a possibility that the starter is still the problem, but i am not sure. I am very nervous to try it again. It really should not be reading less then 12v from the ignition when starting, so those low voltages could be the problem, and the starter could just not be starting.
Have any of you had a similar problem?
Update 10-29-07, 6:30pm: It is not the starter. It was just tested and functions perfectly. So i am very confused. It ran perfectly last night and today it wont work at all. I do hear a few small noises near my ecu, and my fuel pump is making noise. I was hearing a noise near the starter, but it wasn't actually turning the engine, it was just a small whining sound, it also could be the fuel being pumped into the cylinders. Anyone have any ideas.
I woke up and got into my car to drive to school and nothing at all. It was acting like when you dont have the clutch in, but being i never connected that part, it has never mattered. The only thing i hear is a click from my ecu. I havent had any starter problems and i have been driving it for 3 weeks. It has always started really strong. Anyone have any ideas. I am almost thinking it could be something wiring related, but i guess it could be the starter going, i am just used to starters slowly going, not all of the sudden. Let me know what you think.
Also, i have read from many posts that it should be a 1990+ starter to replace.
Anyone know how often the starter solenoid goes out?
