Did you check the battery wire going to the starter and the engine ground? If those are good and you jumper the starter solenoid to the battery and it just clicks or spins, then you have a bad starter.

I was having the same issues already half a year ago. I went to the store, came out, click. 5 minutes later it starts. Then it never happened again for 3 or 4 months. Now i can't start it period. It seems like its a degrading problem. Probably a connection or contacts in one of the electrical devices. How else would you explain the worsting of a problem? not a sudden brake.
So yesterday i changed the key cylinder and now it starts every time, only from jump though.( i have battery drain issues, a short or smth). So at least key lock made it movable again. I'm gonna change the ignition switch today.
Try to do change the lock and the ign.switch. it's not expensive to buy and see if that's what it is.

Lock and ignition, wouldnt that mean you would have 2 keys for your car then? That would be very innoying.

I am very confused because when i hotwire it, it doesnt start. Yes, it sounds like something is just kinda spinning, but nothing actually happens.

Yes it would mean two keys, unless you have an alarm. This way you dont need the key to get in the car. But my car wasn't making spinning noises, just clicks. So after all it might be the starter. If you have friends who have supras try to interchange the lock and an ignition switch. Or if you don't want to buy a new one, or ,don't have other supras available, get one in the junk yard. Those items are small enough just to carry em out in your shoe or smth. At least you'll know if that is what it is. Also, if you believe it's the starter you can send yours for rebuilding. There are shops that do this kind of jobs. Unfortunately, i only heard of them, i can't refer to any shop in particular, sorry.

I have a big problem also, what on earth do i use for a replacement starter. The starters in the stores are not threaded so i cant use them. I have tried a 90 starter and talked to napa about the 1994 n/a supra starter. They are not threaded. What works????

You have to use a starter from a 91-92 Supra, Cressida or a MKIV one works as well.

Okay, the MKIV and the MKIII 91-92 dont fit. THey don't have the threads for the bolts to connect to. Also they look different from the propeller shaft angle. See from the picture from Napa's website, they holes are smooth. None of the stores around here have them in stock, so i cant have them just pull them from the back room.

Strange, I have a Cressida, I have had a 91 Supra, now a 92 , with a 1JZ 7m, as well as a 2JZ, and I had a threaded started in all of them. ( yes, I have been around)
I wouldn't trust Napa's photos since they are for Illustration only.
Either way, its good you were able to rebuilt it.

I had it rebuilt. It is all pretty now. The shop did it pretty inexpensively, being that they had to track down some random parts and rip apart a few other starters to get it to work. It was 157 and it took a day. I will snap a picture before i put it in. Everything was shot internally. They replaced most all of the components.

decent price considering the new one from toyota is just under 200$ so you saved a bit ;) well as long as they did a good job lol

All good, i have been driving her for 2 days. Very good starter. I dont think a Japanese one would be 200 bucks from Toyota. This one isnt even in the American denso catalog.

mine was 180 (from my toyota dealer), i bought it for my mkiv 4 years ago and never put it in and now im useing it for this car

Can we confirm this, I need to replace my starter and since the Supra is my daily right now finding time for it to be down is kinda difficult.

So the MKIV starter does work, any/all years??

i wish it could have been confirmed before i spent a week trying to figure it out. From what i dig up, they were not threaded. People have shown some that were, so i am seriously confused. The rebuilder shop had no cross match for the denso number on my 1jz starter. I wish someone had pictures of a MKIV out of the car, the ones i found didnt have threads on the housing, and required a nut and bolt.
