mine is threaded you can see it in the picture i posted (note there is no nut on the other end holding it up just the bolt). and im using a 1j bellhousing.

and bill im never ever going to autozone for a starter again :) i wasted hours thinking i did something wrong on my friends civic when it was just a bad starter to begin with

the part that goes inside the bellhousing looks different than the 7m's and the 2jz's but i dont think it would matter

its always good to get the oem nipondenso starter for the toyota's. i have a 91 toyota truck and it had the same problem. i would hear whining noises from it at crank so i made sure all connections were good and then changed the starter. i bought a bosch and i went through about 8 of them through warranty. i then decided to go with the oem one and see if it makes a difference. it did and i never had an issue again.

yah i ran into that a few times and learned my lesson with them. they have the tester there for starters and altenators so when i get one i make em hook it up and check it first lol. but i dont mind changing a somthing such as a starter on warranty. but things like igniters and coilpack im still all about not getting refurbed

also to confirm it i know 100% that the starter off my 2j na SC300 worked perfect. I used it since i knew it was for sure good. I have the other starter fromt he 1j i will go get it tested and sell it on here soon too.

Alright, this shit is driving me up the wall...Guy at the shop told me brushes looked ok, and that based off what I told him it was doing that the solenoid needed to be replaced. Had that done, also just replaced the battery, problem seems to have gotten worse. It is now every time I go to start the car I have to turn the key 4 or 5 times quickly to get it to start.

Where else can I look for a problem?

I would suggest a complete rebuild or just get a replacement. On mine, there were so many components that went bad, it wasnt worth trying to fix one part at a time. The brushes died on mine though which caused a few other systems to go.
