well I didnt read everyones response but I had mine for 4 months before it had an abnormal reason for blowing but it did. Something else would of eventually done my motor in anyways. I just did the rebuild myself and due to time n money it took me 5 - 6 months. Ive had the car since Jan, and drove it like it was brand new for 2 months, then developed a knock, 3 months later or so the engine was toast. Now I just got it back on the road kinda and Im working out its kinks. I still need a few more things.

Its alot of time, monney and a huge hassle, the problem is once you own one you dont ever wanna give it up, its a disease. Get a supra and a beater, youll need it someday. Unless you get a MKIII with a 1jz already in it, its almost guarenteed with a 7m engine.

THere are ways to do it right, but for a DD, its not a good idea.

I am a senior in college and have owned my MK3 since I was 16. It has been very well taken care of since it was new and I have had maybe 2 weeks total unscheduled downtime since I have owned it. It is my daily driver.

This does seem to be opposite the norm with these cars, however, so I would suggest that you listen to your mother's advice.

dont get a supra right now.

just wait after college, or find a job that pays well, then get a supra.

say if u did get a supra right now,
if u have all the tools, and the knowledge of an engine and can do all the work your self than yea go ahead get one, but most likely some will happen along the road.
i says stick with the car u have now as they are way more reliable.
other alternative, find a good shell and work on one slowly.
u can find shells for cheap.

Your profile shows you have a N/A supra. That would be a good dd but i wouldnt want a turbo supra during college.

It's definetly the necessary little stuff that will make the car what you want it, and break your wallet doing so.

I am in the 20%.If you want a MKIII supra you have to learn or know how to work on them. They are WAY too expensive to have a shop to work on.I have 2 Supras They are just as reliable as any used car on the road.I would feel comfortable driving them coast to coast. Its all about knowledge of fixing the supra right and before a small problem becomes a big one. These cars are 15yrs or older they need repairs no matter how many miles are on it.Good luck in finding one thats in good shape

My father drove a supra (89 or 88) and it did not give out until 200,000 miles. It actually was his first supra. He is now on his 3rd and its running great! No mods. Now my 89 is about to get a rebuild, BHG. However this was after alot of mods and almost 20lbs of boost. Gonna spend about 6500.00 and it will be tight when its all finished. So if you can keep from the mods till your out of school and pay attention to the oil I dont see why it would not last a long time.

The best advice is dont buy someone’s project , even after its finished. My 89 was moded before I got it and I am shure I was lied to that the head gasket was changed. Get a stock supra and mod it after your done with school. In the mean time read allot on Supramania and learn all the things you need to know.

Good luck with mom...

Chad - How the F are you 16 and a Senior in High School?

:dunno:
Skipped Kindygarten. :naughty:
When I took the application exam for the school I go to, I was originally applying for K, but they told my parents I did so good I could just go straight to first grade. So I did. Its kinda weird, youngest person in the class. I turn 17 right before I graduate. But its cool.

JMDigital - Very true. Anytime you buy a modded car, to any extent, no matter HOW great it seems for the time being, you are just dealing with that persons problems down the road.

So......Then aside from skipping Kindergarten, you would STILL be a year younger than the average Senior. Why is that?

In my graduating class, like 88% of the people were 18 and the rest were 19.

Agreed.
Thats the problem I'm having now.
The engine rebuild was apparently done haph-hazard, my mechanic says he's disgusted with everything he's coming across, loose bolts, unevenly torqued head bolts, tons of oil and grease, etc etc. Even after all the money was spent on that car things were still done terribly, and it only lasted about 15000 miles on that rebuild. :3d_frown:
Definitely only buy stock, or a professionally done, VERY lightly modded from someone on here who knows what they're doing and did it right. Trust me, you'll pay for it later on if you get some ricer-kid's budget rocket.

Edit:

Really? Weird. Most of the people in my class started the year 17, and will be/have turned 18 before the year's end. I was born in May so already I'd be a lil younger than most of them.
I think the only other person in my graduating class who won't be 18 when they grad is my girlfriend lol. We're special :biglaugh:.
Of course, its easy to know who all will be what age when your graduating class is only 46 kids lol.

Freshman year: My class had like 417 students.
Senior year @ Graduation: we had like 178 people walk across the stage.

Drop-outs & School changes FTL. :nono:
