I finally have a set of MKIV wheels on the way so I want to order tires soon so they will be here when the wheels show. I just want to know what is the widest tire size that will fit on the wheels front and rear. A friend of mine told me he thought that a 305 width would fit in the rear but I have my doubts. I think a 245/40/17 would be about the limit in the front but I am not sure bout the rear. I searched around but I can't seem to find the info about the tire size but there is plenty of info about the wheel fitment. Also if you have pictures of the different tire sizes on the wheel that would be great too. Thanks

I have 235s on the front and 275s on the back. Although you can run much wider tires on both the front and rear. But what I've found is there a huge price difference after 275s, for say a 275 would be $140 for a specific tire and a 285 in the same tire is $50 more expensive. But I have seen 315s on MKiVs before.

Do you have close up pictures of the wheel and tire combo?

I run 275/40/r17 rear, 255/40/r17 front Falken Azenis rt-615's. Slight rubbing on full lock, but that was cured by adjusting the bump stops. ;)

Rears: I've heard of 275's in the back, while the wheel is on a mkiv chassis. But I don't think you can go with anything wider than 255 on the mkiii (rear) chassis, on mkiv TT wheels. In my personal experiennce, there's not enough clearance with the rear shocks for anything wider than 255, unless you use an adapter, which many people don't recommend. Remember, if you're after more grip and performance, (a lot) bigger is not necessarily better.

I have 235/45's on the front and 275/40s on the rear and they fit really well. Like Fletch said, prices start to go up pretty fast once you go bigger. I wouldn't want to go much wider than 255's in the front and 305's in the rear IF I wanted them to be as big as possible.

A 305 in the rear would be sick!! I think the MKIII looks great with a really wide tire!! Does anyone have pics of a 305 in the rear?

I have absolutely no issues with my 275's out back, and I'm lowered on Eibachs, and no spacers.

Ah yeah, forgot to say, I'm on Tien coilovers. I can't lower them too far, not because they hit the inside of the fender, but because they will rub on the spring/adjusting nut/jam nut because the camber is so far off. With a spacer I could probably handle 295s after rolling the fender while keeping my current height adjustment.

I think you can fit 275 easily. I currently have 255 on my mkiv rims and the tires are too narrow for the rims. Im going with 275 on my next set.

You can't go much larger in the back than this. 295, MAYBE 305, but on a 9.5" wheel, you're really not increasing your contact patch any.

As for the front, 255 is really about the limit of what I would run on the 8" wheel. My turning radius sucks now due to rubbing ;)

just for reference, I forgot I had this picture on my server, 255s on MKIII 5 spokes:

He's on this site, but I'm not mentioning names ;)

305's on the rear do fit.
my mkiv wheels have stock fronts at 235 and rears are 275/40, lowered tokico shocks and springs, no spacers.

To fit the 305's on there would I have to use spacers or roll the fenders?

I have 235/45-17F and 275/40-17R on H&R and Tokicos with no problems. I choose the 45 series in the front to try to give it a little height because I knew the H&R's would be dropping the front way down.

All tires are slightly different so determne what brand and model tire you want and then check on the manufactures website for recomended size limitations. The tires I have on the MK4TT rears specify not to go any wider than 275 on a 9.5" wheel.
