funny it took gm so long to design a good 4 banger lol
And they still haven't, really - the ecotec was pretty much entirely designed by Lotus, with GM bankrolling the project.
Lotus is damn proud of that motor (it's on their webpage) and they have every right to be.

Now if only they'd supplant the 2ZZ with their homegrown solution in the Elise...

That engine in an elise or exige would be sick, i've been in a exige 240 cup car at the track, and that car hauls ASS!

Sadly the Supra is more comfortable than a Camry...

Old thread, I know. I was in the search engine to answer an old repeating question.

I don't think it is sad. I think it is a great thing. The wife never says no to riding in it.

2ZZ-GE, not FE. The F and G heads are of a different design. The M and JZ use the G type heads while the UZ engines use the F type heads. I think it has something to do with the cam angles.

There is one cam gear in the FE head. The cams rotate from a common gear drive to save space. And yes, with the GE head the cams can be spaced a little further out to help airflow across the valve. I don't think Toyota has a V engine with G head. Maybe one of those V8 Lexus models now. I don't do Toyota anymore.

Correction - Celica GTS motors. MR2 has the 1ZZ-FE while the GTS, Elise, and Exige all used the 2ZZ-FE motor, Lotus tuned the 2ZZ to make 190hp while Toyota opted for their tune which was 180.

Built by Yamaha.
