I like the newer cars, they're comfy etcetc. But when I look at their price tag, and at the price of Supes/my Supe, I kinda forget the new cars :D

Makes sense SS500. The listed add ons for mine are Cali emissions (no charge), power driver's seat ($210), ABS ($900), and floor mats ($72). Freight and handling were $225. I made them throw in the factory cover and manuals for free. Hard to believe it'll be 20 years in a couple of weeks. Seems like yesterday. Time for something new me thinks.

I dunno. I have a plan but things don't always go according to it. Probably in the next year or two. All depends on what goes wrong with it, how cheap I'm feeling at the time, and what comes out that catches my eye. Currently leaning towards a new Z but not too seriously. Truth is I usually have bigger things to worry about than cars. Don't worry, it'll happen to you ;)

There's always that little (or big) something that happens. I honestly don't see myself owning one single car for over 20 years. It just shows your patience with the vehicle, not to mention you've saved hundreds of thousands by keeping the same car this entire time too...

I was in the same boat as the poster, thats where my crazy ass ideas of putting the MKIV dash into my MKIII came about but when it comes down to it, Im doing this very soon over the next 3 months, I should be happier...

Replacing fan and geting new shroud
taking off the head, lapping it, getting 3 way valve job done (already have ARPs so Im good there)
Throwing on a NX Nitrous kit that goes from 50 shot to 200 shot.
Aluminum flywheel, new clutch
Aluminum Rad (koyo)
Alum driveshaft
3 new prosport gauges
Redoing gauge cluster with red leds
painting interior black, new seats for front, re upholstering back seats, carpet
getting car painted black
TRD Shift knob and MAYBE a steering wheel...

Then Ill be happy with my car and stop worrying about walking into my work one day and financing a Civic Si :)

Having a car with no car payment is an incredible thing. I miss those days. My current car payment for my 06 Solara Drop Top could have covered $500/month in Supra upgrades and I would have had the option to not spend money on the Supra for a month and do something else. Now I am stuck in a car payment for the next several years.

I do look at keeping my cars for as long as possible. I got the Supra in 1996 and was still driving it daily nearly 10 years later. I plan to take care of the Solara and have it still running in 2017 and beyond.

Steps to keeping yourself happy with your "old" Supra.
1. Keep it running - well. Nothing is a bigger bummer than not being able to drive your Supra. Before going all crazy with upgrades make sure the Supra is in tip top shape and is running the best it possibly can. This will also increase your chances for success when you finally start to build up those project.

2. Have the interior redone. Nothing SCREAMS "OLD" more than a trashed interior. When I got my leather redone in 2001 I felt like I had a brand new car. Of course now I am addicted and want to have it redone again because it isn't as new as it on that first drive home from the shop.

3. Keep your Supra CLEAN! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten comments on my Supra (body istyle is 10+ years old now) when it is clean. Take some pride in your ride.

My Solara is GREAT! Don't get me wrong. But even on the nicest day with the top down it can't compare to my 1989 Supra Turbo 5 Speed Sport Roof.

Check, check, check.... maybe that's why I'm kinda happy? :D

That's mainly what it's about. I bought the car only because a job I'd taken at the time offered a $600/month car allowance in addition to salary. That was serious money in 1987 and I saw a way to get a new car for "free". Any car would have done but in a weak moment I bought this one. Otherwise I'd have never done it and probably never will again because I consider the buying of cars new to be one of the dumbest financial decisions the average person can make.

Here's the best part: The car ended up truly being free. I was laid off 6 months later, after 4 months of training that required me to live in a hotel away from my family. My boss, who had been with the firm 25 years, was also laid off. He was so pissed he spilled the beans to me and others who lost their jobs about something the company hoped would never get out, something they knew was going to happen before they hired us. In came the lawyers. As part of the settlement my car got paid for and them some.

It's one reason I became motivated to make it last as long as possible. It's been good to me. Cheap, reliable, and puts cash back into my pocket every single day. Not the same reason others wax poetic about it but plenty good enough for me.

That's very lucky for you that the law suit occured, unlucky for the company though ;). That was a rare find, a job that paid a 600/monthly car pymt, and in the mid 1980's to boot!

I couldn't agree more. I left the Supra. Got a GTO. Very nice car! Very big payment. Too big in fact. had to get rid of it and get something more reasonable. It was gonna be hard replacing the Ls1. I had to find a car with power, style, luxury, grace... I settled on... An A70 Supra. I challenge anyone in the world to show me a better car for the money. Style, power, comfort, driveability... sure they are old. But they'll still stomp 75% of anything on the road. And with a 2j motor, I will own all!!! :evil2:

Well I have recently aquired a job at the worlds largest auto auction ( manhiem, PA, USA) and have been driving , well let's just say the MKIII is no SL65 AMG nor will it ever be i understand that. But at the same time after working a full 10hr shift, i get a bit depressed getting into the ol' supra. it seems unstable in it's power delivery and just general appeal. I mean i love the look of the supra's... all years. but i guess i am looking to make the old 87 look and feel more like an 07 know what i mean??? I've even been contimplating buying a MKIV ( i feel bad about this because i love the older autos as no one evn cares about them any more) so give me some pep talks to get my @$$ in gear to get things done.
Quit crying...

Im assuming that most, if not all people with A70 Supras have paid them off or paid in full at time of purchase. This means, if finances permit...you could get a car that you really want for luxury or comfort and drive the supra when you want speed and just wanna have fun. Yes its an old car, and yes it doesnt have luxury or many of the creature comforts of a more modern day car...but its not worth throwing away because I can guarantee that you will miss it and want another one. So you might as well keep it, drive it when you feel like it, and on the other days, drive a new car that will satisfy your other needs.

Sit in a new BMW/BENZ/LEXUS or even some non luxury vehicles.....over 20 years, interior design and materials have improved greatly. Things are just pieces together better now a days like the dash and many items all around. Theres nothing wrong with a clean MK3 interior, but its just dated. Going from a new luxury car to the mk3, no matter how clean it is, you can feel its age.

One thing I can say tho is that I prefer the mk3 interor/dash/console over a mk4.

This guy, is just stating that he is in and out and around many new luxury vehicles and it makes him think about his car when he gets in it at the end of the day. I would too....many of my friends have very nice cars and I love being in them but it doesnt force me to think that I need one or want one.

I've driven many cars, luxury and non, I have to say that the supra is the most comfortable ride so far. How many cars do you know of that have a nut cooler? I mean, c'mon! As long as the leather's in good shape, or re upholstered, everything's fine. The dash layout of the MKIII is also very pleasing and not an eyesore like some of the newer cars I've seen (I do love the RX-8's cluster setup though...).

Please, please, please think twice. After driving a Supra for so long you are not going to be happy driving a "Z" (I drive them every day). Take a look at the Saturn Skye Redline and let me know what ya think.
