Just for the record here, the rod knock you possibly have usually happens due to coolant in the oil (again, usually from a BHG). The coolant and oil mixture is corosive to soft bearings and will eat them away, causing the rod knock. Not all BHG's lead to rod knock, you don't always blow them by a coolant passage, it can be done between two cylinders too.

It's your nemesis that is altering my posts. I'm not saying I don't wear womens underwear, but I would never admit to doing it on here.................:biglaugh:

I'm not so sure I even have this "rod knock", when I first heard the sound, it was more of ticking rather than knocking, and it was coming from the top of the engine, coming from the valves or cams, somewhere like that.

And it occured to me why none of you can accurately describe how this rod knock sounds! Its because you all take such good care of your machines that they would never even get near making any sort of "rod knock", haha! But I'm still taking your advice and not driving it. I will have to drive it to the shop to get the rebuild done though. Just a reminder, its not making any sounds now at all, its sound totally smooth and normal.

Also, I managed to get a car of a friend, what a LIFESAVER!

Yep. Anything that coolant comes in contact with will no longer hold oil to it.

So unless you rebuild.., it's going to get worse.

Yep, so rebuild I will do. My bros a bit of a drifter and his performance shop has a mechanic that loves 7M's so I should be good there. Its not too much to ask of a shop to want to have a look at the block before the head goes on is it? I wanna take a pic and show you guys and see what you think.

Does anyone have a link to what I should expect a properly surfaced prep'd block to look like? I saw one on hear one time.

I feel your pain on this one. I just had to put a motor in my 86.5. It's not alot of fun. Of course, it's a perfect opportunity to put on new belts, hoses, HG, etc while the motor is out. Or spend some $$$ for a GTE swap!

Ok guys, I spoke with the owner of the shop I'm getting the rebuild done at. He is quite knowledgable about the 7M, he said he'd done a few and learnt early on about the incorrect spec. for the head bolts. He also mentioned something I've never heard from any forum. He said it has to be around 75ft-lbs(thats pounds right?) AND it has to be 90deg something, I didn't quite understand what he meant by the 90deg thing, but he said its something no-one ever tells you about. He said the problem in Australia was that when mechanics would rebuild 7M's they would get the Toyota spec of 34N-m of torque for the bolts and would think it meant ft-lbs and so the head would be really loose and obviously the HG would go.

Also, he told me something I didn't know. He said one way of knowing if you had a BHG was the hydrolic lock symptom. Cause if you get water in the cylinders and try start the car the engine will lock and struggle turning over because water doesn't compress. Anyway, I've been having this symptom and its good to know he told me about this before I mentioned that I was experiencing it.

I will be taking it in Wednesday and it should be done in a week. I will take photos of the block after it gets decked and show you guys. =)

he mentioned the noise went away, what about valve tick? starving the top end of oil could have worn the lifter pucks couldn't it?
