so..i'm still pretty new to cars in general, so please forgive me if this is a really dumb question.

but.

a friend of mine says if you have an autmatic tranny, you need to switch the drive lines if it is going to manual. is this true? also, if it is, is it very expensive?<please give me some price ideas>

i dont think it is true..but..im a neophyte through and through haha.

drive lines?

theres hundreds and hundreds of posts on this topic, i even talk about it in my build thread because im actually doing it with my 2jzgte swap (i have prices too)

honestly not sure why you would want a manual transmission other than the "it aint cool unless its manual" thing that keeps going around the schoolyards hehe

you need pedals (brake and clutch) , clutch line , clutch master cyl , slave master cyl , the transmission , the complete clutch setup (with all the rings washers plates yada yada), driveshaft (the r154 or even the w58 is shorter than the automatic transmission), let us not forget the inspection covers which are about 70$ each from toyota, also you might need seals, of course gear oil, might need a new shifter socket bushing as any bushing is torn up by now since these cars are older than you hehe

the list can go on~ especially if problems get in the way

i think $1,000 if everything goes right is a good estimate :) i posted exactly what i paid in my thread too if it helps any..

Just alittle info for ya. Auto's are quicker shifting, and you can't keep your hand on your ladies upper leg if you have a stick to worry about shifting. I admit they are fun to drive at times, but is it really worth all that expense to change out? Why not just bought a standard in the first place if its that important to ya? Just my 2 cents worth. :sarcasm:

cuz sadly enough you get zero respect where i am at unless your car is stick. plus, i feel way cooler, and you cant drift very well in an auto...cant really drift at all actually....and if it ain't sideways, it ain't fun!

what engine do you have? money wise depends what kind of transmission you want. sounds like you just want to switch to manual for shits and giggles. :biglaugh:

also, if going auto-5 spd, or maybe even a 6 spd, depending on wallet size, would i need to strengthen the rear end? cuz with manual trannsmisions, you actually get to feel those 300+ tf lbs of torque lol.

as far as what engine i have, i have a twin 2j waiting for it's new home.

the rear end should be fine. i used to have an auto mkiv. just do a little brake stand off the line and i had a few pounds of boost. some guys gave me shit. they would come up look at my car, and under their breath to their friend "oh its an auto" when they are cruisin around in their honda, srt 4 shit. they didnt talk shit about it when i smoked them though. like the other guys said, you can get consistant with an auto, only thing is the auto is not as strong as a standard tranny.
