STUPID F'ING A340E - Leaks like a damn sieve (the pan) and seems I'm redoing the damn thing EVERY 3 MONTHS!! Used Toyota's FIPK (cleaned pan really well, checked for flatness, applied about 1/4" bead, let sit for about 3.5 minutes, then installed - same as I would for any silicone)

Nope, springs a leak on the passenger side, between the front #2 and #4 bolts. 3 MONTHS LATER -

Do the same thing, only this time save myself $10 and use regular old Permatex Red.

3.5 months later, I'm leaking again, only this time on the DRIVER'S SIDE right @ bolt #5 from the front. I figure 'eh.. probably just a little loose, I'll tighten it a little.'

THE THREADS ARE F'ING STRIPPED. I'm plenty pissed at this point, as now I have to pull the pan again, and helicoil that hole. :3d_frown:

But wait! That's not all!! Remember bolt #3 that original gave me trouble on the passenger side? YEAH THE BOLT BREAKS OFF FLUSH WITH THE CASING.

So here I am, now getting to 8pm at night, pissed off, laying under my car, with my $4/qt Toyota Type T-IV DRIPPING INTO MY FACE as I try to drill out that damn broken bolt, and helicoil THAT side as well.

Naturally, I've only got 1 6mm x 1.0 helicoil left, so what do we do?

To the '88 Accordmobile, Batman!

High-tail it to Autozone, which is THANKFULLY still open (running almost 9pm now) and they have NO 6mm helicoils. Just one $30 6mm set, with a tap, tool, and 3 whole coils.

WTF. I need it. I buy it. I scramble back to the Accord, and shift my 5 gears through 2.0L of carb'd 92hp fury  back to the house.

Back under the car, IN A PILE OF TRANNY FLUID (by this time, I really don't give a shit) and oh yeah - the mosquitos come out. Freakin' bastards tried to transfuse my blood, with no return policy! So I head inside, whip out the trusty box fan, and give them a heapin' dose of WINDTUNNEL!

30 minutes later, I've got 2 fresh helicoils in, and found another bolt that was starting to go - so I coil'd it, too.

[/rant]

So I'm trying something different. A real, honest to God, cork transmission pan gasket for the A340e. I've never had a problem with one leaking on any other car I had, so we'll see what happens this time :)

 for the Supra. :biglaugh:

I can not WAIT to get my 5 speed in - but I'm holding off, to rebuild it all fresh and new, to just drop in with a fresh forged 7M (yeah, decided against the 1JZ, guys) with a new fresh wiring harness, next summer. I'm going to spend the rest of this school year doing bolt on mods, MAFT-Pro, and suspension work.

:biggrinbo Thanks for letting me rant :D

Holy shit I laughed all the way through that--I'm so sorry Doward, but you made it so comedic!!

ROFL @ Loose Nut behind the wheel--my dad just said that to me today. I think it's a PEBCAD--Problem Exists Between Car and Driver. (adaptation of PEBKAC--problem exists between keyboard and chair)

What instructions on the FIPG? It's a white tube, no writing, that's it. That's what they gave me @ the dealership. $16 for that damn little tube!

Automatics were designed for the driving skills challenged people. They also have the annoying side effect of allowing people to talk on their cell phone while driving. I once read an ignorant quote from a guy who said, "It's not that hard to drive with one hand" in defense of talking on a cell phone while driving. Maybe he doesn't know about manual transmissions? Anyway, that's kinda getting off topic. Automatics FTL. :icon_razz

Agreed swaq!
An auto is OK in something you just drive... even then, I still want a manual... sometimes I wish my DD was auto... sometimes.

I guess that's why the top fuel guys run automatics huh...the're not coordinated enough to shift? Tell ya what...come on down and I'll be happy to show you my tail lights as my crappy automatic pulls ahead on each shift :flamed:

Wow, looks like you got something to prove. I was talking about for street cars, not race cars.

1. I said nothing about automatics being slower.
2. I also did not say automatics were crappy.
3. What I did say is that automatic transmissions tend to make more drivers yak on their cell phone while driving

That being said... Maybe someone didn't tell you, but there are other types of racing besides drag racing. Some racing even involves corners *gasp*. In other types of racing automatics are not necessarily the best.

I don't know about you, but one of my favorite parts of driving is going around corners and having an automatic that shifts up when I let off the gas around a corner just kills the joy for me. No instant power when I get back on the gas as I have to wait as the transmission downshifts back to the gear I wanted to be in the whole time.

Don't forget that there are ways to have just as fast shifts with non purely automatic cars. I'd take F1 paddle shifters or a tiptronic system over an automatic any day.

I totally agree with swaq. Get off the phone fool and while your at it use the other hand to signal so u can communicate with those around u who need it the most! B 4 some other driver parks their car in your back seat.

 w. t. f.? I wasn't trying to change your opinion, sir. Just stating that you are in fact, an ass clown. Saying an automatic is for the driving challenged is like saying that using an impact gun is for the ratchet challenged. once again I say :umno:

On the topic of driving while on your cell phone: Some people have business lives they need to take care of that require being on the phone. Should they always do it while driving?-probably not, but if a call comes in, sometimes you have no choice but to answer it. On this note, ever heard of a hands-free headset?

So to reitterate my previous statement: :asshole:

(P.S.-Nice ninja edit from "retort" to "rebuttal". Trying to gain a bit of respect by sounding intelligent?)

Oh and by the way autos r not crappy they suck. WTF is so involving about a slushbox I'll never know. Although I must admit that when I have to eat on the fly nothing beats an auto. Want more driver input and control go manual want to drive on semiautomatic pilot style go auto just as simple and complicated as that. Oh almost forgot auto are also great for Whips i.e Benz 500 or trucks hauling or towing crap and last but certainly not least beautiful womem who r 2 damm fine for manual work.

Great rebuttal. I love automatics now......

Yes, it was quite a devastating repartee...I was rather impressed. :biglaugh:

I don't really have anything against autos, but it does definitely promote cell phone use while behind the wheel...When I'm in the Supra, it's almost impossible to yak on the phone...I can only manage to when I'm cruising on the freeway, around town, no way.
