I'd rock an MKIV cause it's still a Supra. I wouldn't want to finance it though, since I'd probably start putting money into before it was even paid off and that's just dumb.

Stick a 7M into the MKIV and invest in a fireproof suit. :biglaugh:

Yes, and i am saying this on a very common problem with 20+ year old cars. They just aren't as reliable as many newer cars. Am i saying they can't be? no that is not, it is just the point of someone worrying about reliably means he shouldn't have a 20+ year old Supra as a car.

Personally my car is quite reliable but it took a lot of $$$$ to get it there.

Couldn't be because the owner doesn't have a clue as to how to keep the car maintained and running huh. Saying the Mk III is not reliable is illustrative of perspective and ability. It's only common among a certain type person...the same type that will have issues with a new car as well ;)

Personally though, I would like to have a Mk IV...not because of reliability. The 2JZ and MK IV chassis is the result of the previous generations. An all around excellent car to drive.

I say go for it if you work the finances out. But like anything else i would spend the extra to get the car I wanted (Turbo 6 speed low mileage) rather then buy a ragged out version.

And to those that say they wont spend 20k on a 10 year old toyota you are an idoit...so if it says lexus that makes it worth it?? Right...

LOL...that's all

lol well thanks for the input.

Another big concern of mine is lack of workspace and time to do this swap. I mean i may have to swap wheel, suspension, brake setup, engine, trans, all supporting mods, electronics and interior. that takes A LOT of time. I spent a summer doing it, of course the fire was the issue and cleaning a burned to a crisp engine.

and as far as the 7m vs. JZ thing goes.... 7m can take a lot of abuse, i've never had ANY mechanical issue with this engine or trans, only thing i had go wrong was OBX adjustable cam gears, other than that is was always supporting systems (PS, Intake, etc etc). Proof.

Anyway, i don't have the resources here and thats a big issue, no garage, no major tools (ie engine lift or even a torque wrench) i'd need to find a place that has these things and buying a working MKIV may just be easier since i want to do it eventually anyway.

on a side note, i bought a 57trim ct just the other week a few days before this happens....figures right??? I haven't even gotten the thing back in the mail yet. just my luck. Last time i tried to order one my car caught on fire, i swear im just not allowed by the universe to have a really fast car.

I will never understand why If a car is good it should be worth less or more based on its nameplate. The GTR is worth 70,000$ regardless of if it says Nissan or Infiniti... if there were as many MK4's as say a corvette C5 they would be worth much less, but they are rare, they are good which in turn makes them worth more. Just like E30/E36 M3's still go for lots of money.

personally i think its kind of a bad idea to expect a job right away when you finish school....today its very hard to find a job....i think before you lock yourself down in a contract you better already have a job that can pay for the car..

your smart move would to be just get another mk3 and wait till you get a real job to get a new car....that would suck to have your shit repossessed.

I just checked your old MkIII..shocked to see the same color, year, interior, trans, etc and even made the same month! Do you have the VIN for it? I'm curious how close it was made to mine :icon_razz

well actually my old one (the good one) was red, this one is black with the front and rear bumpers from my red one. Both of them were Oct 87. You can check on the driver side door what year/month yours was produced

Im not too worried about that. Mechanical engineering can go ANYWHERE. WVU had over a 90% placement rate before even graduating for engineering students

Yeah I know, my MkIII was made in October of 87 too. It'd be nice to know what day specifically, but I've never been able to figure out that detail.

Not really, there is a possibility but some things just break from old abuse and use. It is the nature of cars. I have had zero problems with my 2000 sienna, but the supra just sometimes decides it want's to break something, and i baby the car. it is just an old car, that is the way it is.

well i mean, typically in comparing the 7m its usually to a JZ, i just assumed. My mistake. My point remains though.

open a newspaper, everybody is hurting. Including the engineer that has you beat with 10 years experience...

in all honesty, save the money. No sense over stretching a very small budget to be strapped down with payments on a personal loan with ADJUSTABLE rates.

Getting a better frame a shell would be ideal (if you MUST spend it :)), but if your not going to do that dont tack on a car loan to your "to be paid" pile fresh out of school. Its a shitty way to get ahead.

i understand where you are coming from but again, i have no fear of NOT getting a job. My friends are offered all the time and if they can i can. As far as adjustable rates, i stay with fixed through my credit union, they give me very nice rates for my age and lack of credit. You are right though, if i do that im digging myself a financial hole, but nothing i think i couldn't handle. Im very very cautious with money, always have been.

i think your counting eggs that havent even been laid by the hen man. Your friends getting offers is not you, and most importantly the offer can lack the income desired or needed.
think of the MKIV you can pay for out right then in 5 years. they arent going any where! instead of a beat to hell NA, it could be a NICE heavily modded single 2j with all the trimmings... good luck with your decision. :)
