Also, I could swear there is a cross brace in the stock targa...

On the glass or plexi one, well, it could theoretically be done, but you could accomplish much the same thing with a sunroof installed in the targa :p

I've disassembled my factory one completely and there is no bracing. Take off the headliner and seals and it looks just like the CF one, only steel.

A buddy of mine picked up a 'vette with the targa roof. Came with two - the steel top, and a clear one, plexi, I think. It was heavily tinted - from outside the car, you couldn't tell it was transparent, but from inside, it was awesome. He owned that car for years, and I don't think he EVER fit the steel top. All the benefits of a targa, without the downsides. Flawless visibility, no need for a hat and sunglasses all the time, no noise... Do want.

Not enough to stoop to buying a Chevy, though. ;)

Sometimes we pitch targa-size oddly cut up pieces of Lexan at work. (some are 1/4" thick some are 1/8") I've heard you can thermoform it in a big enough oven over a mold. Maybe with a heat gun over a smooth-polished fiberglass form?

You want to experiment, Dave? The shop's in Richmond. I can let you know when we've got some big pieces going into the scrap bin.

Polycarbonite would be best, but it's difficult to work with. It absorbs water, so you have to dry it (or you get bubbles caused from steam) and it tends to stick to molds.

I imagine it wouldn't be hard to make one, it's just getting it to last from the sun beating on it. I don't think there's a huge market for them though at the cost it would take to get it done :(

Time for a 'vacation' to California. Pick up some of the hard hitters from the SoCal Supras crew, some pliers and a blowtorch, and go visiting.

You could also use a steel mallet and rubber tubing.

some of the f-bodys also came with the plastic t-tops. iirc the were acrylic, but regardless they were recalled and replaced with glass ones, as in the hot sun, they would deform and start to melt into the interior. lexan is a bit more heat resistant than what gm used, as my boat has a windsehild made from 1/4 inch lexan, and its still in perfect shape 6 years later.

That was originally a line from the movie Pulp Fiction, that I misquoted on purpose to make it fit the circumstances better. :) My favorite non-lethal force has been 3 feet of 0 gauge welding cable for decades now.

F-bodies are tempered glass t-tops

And really really easy to put on or take off. I do kinda miss that about the SS. It's *almost* too much hassle to pull the targa off our cars, unless you have awesome weather all the time, in which case leave it off until you need to park somewhere other than home...
