How hard is it to mate a getrag 6spd tranny to a 1jz and what all would you need to do it. I am going to be driving this car quite frequently and mostly on highway and was wanting a lower gear so this thing won't guuzle the gas like my 7m does. Plus I figure a 6th gear will help a little even if I have to shift 1 more time.

Once again, search. The problem with the Getrag is that it doesn't fit in the the tranny well without a lot of modification. Not worth it. Plus, the tranny's are about $3000.

Just keep your R154 and change out the rear end for one with a different ratio.

I have one for $2800, but there are other parts needed on top of that.
You would want to regear your diff with a lower ratio (~3.2)and make a custom driveshaft. You wouldn't have to make a complete driveshaft, just the front half, which I would do at cost to help with the project. You would also need a 6 speed clutch and flywheel. It has a slave and fork included.

Who can make a final gear ratio that low for MKIII?, I have only seen a 3.25 final gear ratio for the MKIII once, It came out of a TURBO A model, A guy from holland has the diff, Is there a company that can copy that final gear ratio & make it, I know it will be custom & asking TRD will be impossible to get a answer from then cause they probably think am crazy.

Toyota is not the only one who makes a ring and pinion set. Call an off-road drivetrain place in yor area and inquire about it.

You will not receive much fuel savings with the 6 speed. The final drive ratio is very similar to the r154. So not a good idea.

It's not about fuel savings, it's about a manual transmission transmission that can handle 1500hp!!! :aigo:

But that's not the intention the OP expressed.

He just has a misconception that 6spd = lower gear/better gas mileage. Which isn't true.

If the Getrag was a double overdrive, it would have made sense.

It's going to cost like $6000 even if he did the install himself, it would take a really really really really long time to make up $6000 in gas savings.
That's why I disreguarded the origional question and just stated the obvious.

If you just want to save gas buy a cheap daily driver that gets 30+ mpg.

Lots of modification? I dont think so. Maybe with shifter linkage, but a couple good bangs to the tranny tunnel and it fits.

I have seen it done, but IMO there is no legit reason to do so. Anything north of 500whp for me and its time to swap to auto.

I rather have a getrag, I have met a few big horse power supra owners & have told they rather have a 6 speed than a th400, TH400 for drag racing is the shit! The guy that i met told me that the tranny runs real hot & he had so many problems with the torque converter it wasn't funny.
