general questions about my 86.5, what to do and how to do it.

I had the same symptoms, no mixed oil, no smoke, but I had a BHG, not saying you do, but the possibility is definitely there. I'd do a leak down test to be sure

In the mean time try to bleed your cooling system, and replace your radiator cap, see if the problem goes away, keep your fingers crossed!

how could i find out if its a bhg? I dont think im leaking coolant, but i'll check tomorrow morning.

Im hoping, and pretty sure its nothing major. the AC may be shot, but a new one would run like, what, 3 bills?

oh, and i live in palm springs, ca. we get 120* summers. And as i found out today while driving, NO AIR gets into the car when the windows are down. what the deuce is with that!!?

leak test is preformed how?

Screw the A/C at this point. Having a good climate control system is worthless if you have coolant in your oil, eating at your internals or simply letting coolant out of the system.

A leak down test: http://autos.yahoo.com/maintain/repairqa/engine/ques057_1.html

They dont even mention a BHG, lol.

I'd also try a coolant system pressure test, although mine never seemed to leak when cold so I dont know if a coolant pressure test would have done anything for me.

If you even suspect a BHG buy a test kit from Napa for combustion gases in the Coolant, carefully read the directions perform the test then base further decisions on the outcome.

A leak down test requires the removal of all the spark plugs
ahhhh come on!
i just had the spark plugs replaced and theres that freaking huge intake hanging over my 7m. lameee :aigo:

Buy the kit do the test then you will know for sure one way or the other.

Depending on the results your future will lead in two TOTALLY different paths where the car is concerned.

Don't "guess" or go on gutt instincts find out for sure.

Even if your NAPA test passes you could still have a BHG. That was the case for me. I got the kit, used it many, many times being sure that I didn't have a BHG.... and what happened a month later? I had spent potential BHG money on extra stuff and I had coolant dripping down the side of my block.

Watch your coolant level in the overflow VERY closely. That was my first indicator. When I searched for leaks to find where the coolant was going, I found the dripping coolant on the block.

my switch for the lights, on the left side, whatever that things called, is really, really loose. i can get the lights to turn on and everything but i've turned off the lights while trying to put on my turn signal. is there a way to tiggten it?

and how am i going to conclusively figure if i have a BHG or naw? NAPA test + watching coolant?

It does sound like a BHG. BTW, I hope you didn't just pay nearly $4,000 for this car did you? (If this is the same car I'm thinking of).

Anyway, start with the coolant test.

The NAPA test will do it assuming its blown in the common place, between one of the water jackets and the cylinder. It sounds like suprarx7nut's was blown between a water jacket and the outside. For now, do the leak down test.

Have you had a light that looks like a birdcage come on? It's on the left side of the gauge cluster, by the temp gauge.

That sound isn't good. You're hearing air in your heater core. You have air getting into your cooling system somehow, either a leak of some sort, or possibly a blown headgasket...

Jeesh...I've had that sound for evers :D Even after the engine rebuild, the first sound I heard :icon_bigg

I had a leak into my cooling system that only was apparent once I took my undercover off and saw that there was a tiny crack in the lower radiator hose. $20 later it was fixed and my cooling system is doing great, no more gurgles, no more air in the system.

Of course, my car is 6 years newer, so depending on how hard yours was driven you might have a bigger problem.

lol, well then I'd guess you still had air trapped in your system and never fully bled it out! IIRC the heater core is the highest point in the cooling system, so even though a fully sealed system should bleed itself over time, i could still imagine some air getting trapped in the core...

Bleed your system! Jack up the front of the car HIGH as possible! Open the rad cap, allow to heat up and watch the air bubbles flow out. There's a bit more to it than that, so search for proper instructions.

Yup i didn't mention that, i didn't even mention adding water which you obviously need to do as the air comes out, reving it to 2.5k or so and holding for a bit every now and then, letting the t-stat cycle enough times to heat the radiator about 15 minutes...

Didn't really want to spell it out ;)
