Haha.. ive been having a blast latley...

I geuss too much....

well... I almost flipped over and died.

Story:

So, I was in 4th gear, just getting past redline at around 135-140mph, and, BAM! my drive shaft ripped in half, tore through my floor, air lines to my front bags, e-brake, etc.

So, I suddenly loose my front bags, the car hits the ground, my rear brakes lock up due to e-brake getting tangled, and I come to a scrapping stop on the side of the freeway. Waiting 3 hours for a flatbed tow truck to deliver my car 3 miles.

It was one fucked up night, I got home at 3AM....

Here are the pics.... pay attention to the front crossmember, where the metal turned blue do to extreme griding.

ENJOY!!!!!

I though this picture, plus my description would tell you what it is...

p719654_1.jpg

Its a 1973 Toyota MarkII.... You know, like a Chaser, Cressida, MarkII, Cresta...

Just like your supras are JZA80's and MA71's, my car is a MX29

As per example... a 1983 Toyota Cressida is a MX63, a 1988 cressida is a MX73, and a 1990 cressida is a MX83...

Same shizzle, just happens to be the very first X chassis to be produced.

Its an X family car... just like your supras are A family.

Holy shit!

This is why you need to place the valves on your airlines as close as possible to the bags!

Looks defiantly like ductile failure, you sure the tail shaft was made to cope with the power you were putting through it? Did it ever feel like there was vibrations/unbalanced.

Its failed directly in the center of the shaft? Defiantly looks like it wasn't supposed to take the kind of power you were putting through it. Any hard launches etc?

If I had a pickup with tons of clearance, then I would consider this... Keep in mind that I barely had room for a fuel pump.

The issue lies in the guy who balanced it. This shaft was rated to support an abusive 600 tq. Right before it blew, it made one of the nastiest vibrations. When I pulled the chunks out, the U joints were still mint, so that isnt the issue.

I dont launch it, but even if I did, it should still be 100% able to take it. Shit, this same company makes drivelines for stock Vipers that make double the power I am putting out.

Holy shit!

Good thing you're alive!! Did you get hurt at all? That's pretty scary, sounds like something you might be able to sue over to cover the repairs...

But if you were going 140mph on a public road, I'm guessing that might be a bit of an issue...

Either way, good luck!

Wow, I'm seriously impressed! Definitely appeals to the wagon junky in me :) Love the patina look too, I say leave it the way it is. You should post on wagonator.com, the guys over there would love your car.

My current wagon is a sleeper Ford Escort, but I'm still searching for a TE72 wagon...

Pinion angle maybe.....

Either that or it's long enough to have gone "critical" speed wise if you drive fast.

Thats exactly what happened.. I went way over critical speed that the driveshaft was rated for. But, the issue is that they did not tell me that critical speed on my driveshaft was 80MPH....

They pretty much screwed up, they didn't disclose what the critical speed was, and now im looking to start a law suit against them.

DAMN that's LOW for critical there should have been a big RED Sticker on the shaft :(

I've been on a bit of a crusade here for years about NOT using one piece shafts in Mk3's really glad you survived that.

My car was always bashed online; don't let shiet like this discourage you from visiting this site.

i don't understand how someone could bash the soapra? that car is incredible. i wouldn't change a single thing about it- nice work, jose.

Suprona- and to the OP- i absolutely adore this car! kudos on the fab work, the time, and the effort! i love every aspect of it! i say leave the paint exactly how it is. it's badass- no two ways about it!

i'm psyched to hear that you walked away from that driveshaft snapping in half! (and glad the car didn't roll, too)
