Everyone else was doing it, so I got my own BHG and made a thread about it!

Well, I got my very own BHG, so I am in the process of replacing that, and fixing various other problems while I'm in the engine. Ill be posting my progress (with pictures) and my questions here.

Here's the story: i got my '87 turbo supra a couple months ago, and the PO (who i have since found out was retarded) said that it had a GReddy 3mm metal HG on it. Now, I knew that GReddy didn't make a 3mm gasket, but I figured he had the number mixed up or something, and didn't think much of it.

Since then, ive had random overheating problems more and more fequently, and was losing just a little coolant, but no milkshake oil or anything else. I almost overheated it a couple times, but I never once let it get into the red, just about 3/4 of the way up or so, maybe a little closer. the other day i went out to check all the fluids like always, and i was almost 1/2 a gallon low on coolant, and i had chocolate milk colored oil. crap.

So i know i have a BHG, and am in the process of taking my head off to replace it. I plan on using a OEM composite gasket as I dont have the money to resurface the head and block, and wont be doing any modding until next year, when i plan to build the motor.

---Question: Do i absolutely have to take my head to a machine shop and have them check for flatness and plane it flat? Or will i be okay using a stock gasket and arp bolts torqued to 85ft/lbs, and just putting the head back on after i give it a good cleaning?

Ill post some pics later when i get them off my camera.

i would because the head could be warped or cracked. if you put a bad head on it will blow again quick.

I can see the faulty point which caused the BHG: not enough coolant and hope :sarcasm: see sig.

sorry to hear about your bhg. get that head off and check that headgasket if it indeed was a Greddy.
If you're going to take the head off yourself, remember to consult the TSRM because there is a special way to take it off and put it back on.

screw doing the head, if you got milkshake you better replace those bearings! i would hate to see it again... heres the process..

drive
overheat
get bhg
keep driving on bhg and over heat a few more times
get super low on coolant
drive some more
blow the HG so its now leaking into the oil
fix bhg
get rod knock....

its the sad reality... do it right the first time and save yourself the head ache...
and if its been overheated, and i know what you mean by 3/4's of the way up... the head will most likely be warped. even if you did take it off per the TSRM procedure...

Is replacing the bearings really necessary? Its not knocking at all at this point, and i plan on flushing the oil with a clean change a couple times before I drive it again to get rid of all coolant in the system. It was driven a maximum of 20-30 miles with milkshake oil, will it be okay after a good flush?

20-30miles... more chance then i would take.

im just giving you a fair warning, if you dont replace them dont besuprised if you get a little knock knock on your door...

theres been quite a few cases of, BHG fixes... and then rod knock comes down on them... but if you want to try and flush it all out... but i would put in new oil, dry crank it, quite a few times to get all of the old oil out and get fresh oil in... and then i would replace it all. but... best of luck to ya...

i agree with these guys but changing engine bearings is a job. when you are done with the hg and the flushing. put some 10w40 with some lucas. im not saying that this will keep you from having a rod knock but it will help being that you live in texas with the hot temps.

yeah, ive been running 10-40 in it. i only need it to last the winter, after that it can knock all it wants, as i plan on having another car by then.

wtf? why 10-40? somebody hasnt been reading the oil faq... 0-30 or 5w30... the 40w doesnt do any 'better'... and lucas? i doubt thats going to do any more good to his probably pissed off motor...

i dont know about you but from what i have read old school motors are supposed to use old school oil. because newer motors run higher oil psi so they have no need for thicker oil. old school motors run lower oil psi so 10w40 is better especiallly if it has high mileage. 0w30 and 5w30 is like water too damn thin. except for the german castrol full syn.but i think its just too expensive for a oil change myself.

This oil question has been kicked around like a football. If you want factual info, read Jdub's tech series on oil. 30 wt. being "too thin" and all is a fallacy in this particular case. The 7m is a relatively high flow low pressure system.

i don't know about you guys, but with my first sup i put 5w30 into it listening to what some people say is better. long story short i got rod knock about couple months later of owning my first supra. then i decide i would call up toyota and have them look up what the motor came with. it came with 20w50 in 1989 and i'm sure thats what it ran on for a majority of its life without issues. until i come in and fuck it up. the car had 170k on it. i assume if it made it almost 20 years on 20w50 just like most other high milage supras why the fuck would you change what toyota designed it to run on. i know i might get burn for this one, but ever since then i run 20w50 gtx and haven't had one problem. i don't baby my car either. just though i would put it out there.
