Crank bolt/pulley came loose..need some help

If your pulley just came loose enough to start making noise and you stopped the car right away its very unlikely you did any internal damage, I believe is what everyone is trying to convey. Mechanical damage on the snout of the crank from the actual pulley wobbling around is what you should be worried about at this point.

thats why pulling the pan with the motor in is a waste of time and money. the way this mechanic is going about things isn't to impressive.

He was driving it on the interstate, and noticed the noise as he got off and slowed the car. At higher RPM, the wobble would probably smooth out, but would it be balanced is the question? I agree, he did do the right thing in having it towed from that point, but it still needs to be checked out.

cause with the damage on the snout then you wont be able to get a new pulley on...not only that but the key way needs welded and recut so a new key will stay in and keep the pulley aligned....you cant build up weld and regrind the snout with it in the block.....cutting a new halfmoon key is a precision job that needs to be done on a milling machine with a tool they call a "woodruff" cutter

remember the damper is a light press fit and if the snout is fubar then that press fit no longer exists which means that too much stress will be put on the key and it will break again causeing the same shit to happen...that press fit helps the damper not move along with the bolt torquing it down...

ok well i just got word from the shop, the parts came in 10 mins ago he said.. and he said the good news is my crank looked perfectly fine, just the keyways were messed up alittle. He said it would be done tomorow.. they also found a coolant leak behind the water pump, the short elbow hose.. so there going to tighten that up as well. So hopefuly all goes well and i'll be out driving tomorow!!

How old is it. Tightening it with a worm clamp will just cut, make the hose bulge and weaken it. Replace the hose! Front and back. Its a common failure point and it shouldn't cost you much more.

I'd like to hear details as to how they are going to fix the keyway in just 1 day...that would make me iffy.

well i just got a call.. the car is done right now. my friend is coming to get me to go pick it up... Im thinking maybe the keyways weren't even messed up? They said they got everything replaced and the car is running great. As for the coolant leak the hose is new, the clamp was simply not very tight on it.

Ask them how much they torqued the crank bolt to. Just a suggestion and do not tell them. Curious if they know and it will tell a story there. Piece of mind too.

my next question is... would any of whats happened effect my timing in anyway? will i need to adjust things? I also doubt they did any corner cutting in fixing things because when they called me they were very picky and telling me every little thing that was wrong with the car with leaks and such.. they seem very thorough

No the only way timing would be off is if the key broke on the belt pulley.....

As far as lucky goes, I honestly can't believe no damage to the crank was done....I personally would start asking questions on how they fixed the key way...sounds like a jb weld fix to me!

dude.........you have a good amount off money in that motor. i can't believe you will just hand it off to another mechanic. personally if i was in you situation and didn't have a place to do it myself. i would have at least wanted to see the end of the crank for myself. i hope the best but it all sounds shaddy to me.....

well i think i simply got lucky.. went and picked up the car and its running perfectly. They replaced the balancer/pulley, keyways, and new bolt. From the looks and feel of things they did a great job on the car, they even gave me a free ice scraper!! haha ... only reason i took it to this shop is becuase my friend has had work done there before, he owns a supra and he put his word behind their work.
