You apoxied the key back on the crank???? I cant believe that would hold for even a second if it just snapped through metal. thats not the way i would go..lol.. so the shop called and they said I need a new balancer, new crank bolt, and the keyways were messed up. They said there could be more damage to the crank but they wont know till they get in there and see... so far a quote for those new parts and labor is $967.. parts wont be in till tuesday from toyota.

No, I epoxied the hole back to the proper size to remove the half-moon shape the woodruff key dented in the crank snout. As I said, I don't recommend doing that, and if it were MY car, I'd have fixed it properly. That was not an option for the owner of that car, so I did what I could to get it running.

And it lasted perfectly fine until he blew the motor quite a while later, at around 300rwhp.

Unless you were driving the car like that for a long time it shouldn't have shagged any internals, the Crank snout is another matter, as Goon said they're a light press fit and rely on the Damper bolt being done up to 195ft/lbs to keep it in place.

how did the shop know the pulley was trashed but not the crank snout??? if they pulled the pulley, the snout would be right there in front of them..

when this happened on that car did it have any internal damage? as far as the rods and pistons? or bearings?
No, only damgae was to the crank snout.

And this. How could they not notice if the snout was chewed up?

FWIW, I have receipts from the previous owner of my car stating that the crank balancer/bolt fell off of the car while driving and the car immediately stalled/shut off.

Mechanic put everything back on (still deemed it good), torqued down to the proper spec and off it went.

No damage today.

i smell the "run around" or incomplete info from the op.. A trashed crank snout shouldnt cause internal damage and if the shop is saying it needs to be pulled (seems thats what they said from your post) you are getting hustled bud!

I think yall misunderstand the post....I'm sure the damper and snout are fubar and I'm sure the mechanic knows this but I'm also sure the mechanic wants to pull the oil pan and have a look inside just to make sure the crank and bearings are ok! Sounds like a good and smart mechanic which is rare!

Considering the damper was wobbleing around it's 100% that the crank snout is damaged....I would want to check the inside also for peace of mind.

For my own benefit, and for completeness in this thread, can we have some discussion in here about the proper way to torque this bolt to 195 ft-lbs. Mine broke lose yesterday while trying to break the flywheel bolts lose. The thread scares me of future problems if I don't get it torqued back correctly.

well the snout is messed up cause the keyways are messed up.. and i think they did want to drop the oil pan and have a look inside just to be safe.

why aren't you doing this yourself?

drop the oil pan? that isn't some that you can simpley drop. you should have just pulled the motor yourself. i mean wtf do they plan to do when the pan is off. look in there and magically know if things are wrong. i would want more details as far as what there plan is. are they going to plasty gauge your bearing or mic everything out. not to be mean but, if it were me that shit would be at my house on the stand.

Plastiguage and micing is not really needed in this case...either there is damage or not...in this case droping the pan and removing the bearing caps. Would be enough to find possible damage....he could do it himself but he already explained why he isn't.

im not 100% sure right now as to what exactly they are going to do.. they said the parts that they know i need for sure will be in on tuesday. So as they replace the parts they will inspect for further damage and let me know.... as for me doing the work.. i dont have a garage or a stand i can just throw the motor on ;) im in college right now. All i have is a parking lot.
