So I learned the hard way that a 25 amp switch is not enough. Better luck next time

25 amp is not enough for what? The real lesson is everything needs to be fused correctly to avoid electrical fires. :biglaugh:
The switch was for the fuel pump.
We wired the pump straight to the battery and the wires stayed cool. So basically the switch melted.

Huh? The fuel pump is max about 10 amps, you probably had +12v and ground going to the contacts on the switch and when you flipped it on it shorted the battery directly to ground through the switch. There's no way a fuel pump melted the switch like that.
