AMEN.
Especially if that auto trans is set-up properly.

Would you mind elaborating on your stadalone shift controller?

Are you using paddles?
I want to go standalone on my trans and also would like to adapt some sort of ratchet shifter, but it seems they're all cable operated. Failing that, I might go paddles or TH350 (solves the shifter prob).

I run a PCS controller here SB.

It's fully tunable for every parameter in the trans and I have a a343e valve body so it controls line pressure and TC lockup pressures as well.

I have manual buttons set up on the PWR/MAN buttons but the only time I use them is on the dyno (my controller also has "Dyno Mode but I haven't wired a switch for it)

Once tuned you just don't need manual buttons as you can make the trans behave exactly as you want.

More parasitic loss, and less boost.

Stock for stock, the stick was faster IIRC. Once you start modding you can throw that out the window...

I understand your above statement was "Stock for Stock"...

But I must ask. How many R154'd MA70's can run a 13.76 ET with JUST a full exhaust?

I will be going automatic eventually, once I have my single squared away and enough cash for a th350 swap (figuring around 3k) Nothing like the fealing of launching an auto car, even if it was a sequential twin 2jz in a MKIII.

ya definately my modded supra does feel a little slushy and bogs a bit because you can reach higher rpms and rev faster in a stick than auto, thats wat i was thinking.

You rev faster in the manual because you have more gears.

Fastest times I've ever seen out of a stock MKIII by a reputable magazine was accomplished using an auto.

That's driver mod ;)

Hey, there's nothing "Driver mod" about holding your foot on the brake and releasing when the Tree goes Green. ;)
At least not with a 13 second car, LOL.

Like I said, with just a full exhaust, ran a 13.76 @ 105 through my AT.

The best I've ever really seen from a 5 speed MA70 with JUST an exhaust was mostly low to mid 14.XX.

I've driven plenty of AT & MT Supras, and as "fun" as it is ripping through the gears in a MT...You simply CANNOT beat the feel of a BPU++ and higher Supra as it runs through the gears without losing any positive boost.

Another advantage to auto transmissions, at high horsepower levels, is that there's no pressure plate putting massive strain on your crank, trying to push it out of the front of the motor. This is an expensive problem to deal with in a manual trans car by buying muiltiplate clutches.

Example is Annoyingrob's 1JZ block with custom machining that allows the crank to move 1/2" side to side. It helps build torque yo :p

Ok, not really... it tends to break stuff. Who needs a dog when you can walk your crank?

IPT has a transmission that they claim will be good till you reach the 9's. personally when you reach there I think you will have the rest figured out. It is kinda steep at $3375.00. BUT if they stand behind what they sell it would save alot of rebuilding and down time from what you can do to the stocker with just basic upgrades and shimming actuators. I am seriously considering this. I spent 1500 2 months ago to get mine rebuilt and then blew the HG 2 weeks later so now I feel I just wasted money that would have put me almost half way there. live and learn.

I used the auto a342e with my 1jz swap, its much more "plush" I guess is the word. The 7m turbo trans I had was a solid shifting trans and the feel of the converter was stiff with a good low stall so it moved at idle. The jz auto feels like my wifes Lexus trans with a higher stall, I guess its worn out. I have owned a 7m turbo manual with 12psi and straight exhaust and I would bet when my wifes supra was 7m auto stock it would have taken it. I just need to run it now with the 1jz up against one with a stick and see how the two realy compare. Besides, a solid auto with a good converter can actualy create more low end torque at low rpm's.

you just buy the one they were offering or have a custom build? I am going to get mine going running and eventually get one when i get up the money. I am about done with buying what i need for my rebuild now. last is pistons and machine work. getting pistons this week then when all is running smooth I will get the tranny from them.

You get the big extra fan behind the radiator (just behind my monster Tranny fluid cooler)

What? You mean the stocker? That thing is pissant! My manual car came with that from the factory anyways, its just a noisy little thing that I doubt does anything. Mine isnt even hooked up to anything.

AND higher gears in the back for excellent Highway cruising speed, RPM's & mileage.
4th gear might be lower than the R154's 5th (which is .75:1), but I think the differentials were the same between manual/autos. Also, if you want more highway cruising, you can get an 89+ diff with 3.73 instead of pre89's 3.91.

Not sure what my 342e is but I know its OD is higher than the 7m, 75mph is now 500rpm lower after the tach fix. EDIT, aha, found it 0.688

...which is why yours doesn't do a damn thing. :icon_surp
When the temps here in AZ go up, that sucker kicks in and gives that little extra air pull through the AC fins/Tranny Cooler/Radiator, and it DOES make a difference.

...and my car is a 90T/A, which has the higher rear gears (lower numbers). RPM's don't break a sweat at 80 in OD.

Fun as HELL to drop the OD button @ 80-90 and red-line before clicking the little OD button again. Don't ask me what my max speed was: I was busy looking WAY ahead to make sure I had enough room to slow down.

Yay Autos!

Automatics also come with ECT - electronically controlled transmission. You can change to more aggressive shifting by hitting a button. Pretty cool, and you can really tell a difference between the two modes.

But, the biggest advantage of an auto is you can talk on the phone or hold a pop while driving. Or do both :naughty: Sucks when I have to drive my sister's 5-spd del Sol. I actually have to concentrate on my driving! :sarcasm:

Yes, I used to love having my ECT on PWR mode.

After doing a WOT pull and braking....It would downshift HARD to nearly 5500rpms depending at what speed/gear.

It felt great. :)
